Petrobras forwarded to Aneel the process for the deactivation of the Camaçari thermoelectric plant, in Bahia

The Camaçari (Bahia) thermoelectric plant, known as Termocamaçari, is in the process of being decommissioned by Petrobras. The state-owned company started the process with Aneel, the National Electric Energy Agency, claiming that the thermoelectric plant would be unfeasible and also informing that the plant is no longer part of the plans of the natural gas and energy generation sectors of Petrobras.

Petrobras Strategy

The deactivation of the plant is a Petrobras strategy in the area of natural gas and energy, which focuses on the competitive operation of its own natural gas sales and the optimization of the portfolio of thermoelectric products for self-consumption. In accordance with this strategic direction, the state-owned company started the procedure to revoke the grant of Usina Termocamaçari.

In 2017, the plant powered by natural gas was completely surrounded by problems, leading to its unfeasibility. Last year, Petrobras even registered Termocamaçari and several other thermal energy assets in an auction planned by the government to sign a 15-year contract for the production of natural gas, including new or renovated projects.

The Petrobras Thermoelectric Plant in Bahia

Built in 2001, using more than US$ 60 million, the plant – which has the capacity to generate around 120 megawatts (MW) of energy – was the result of a great partnership between Petrobras and the Portuguese company EDP.

About three years later, the Brazilian state-owned company decided that it would have full control of the plant, paying an additional R$ 240 million, amounts corrected for inflation, having until that moment owned 100% of the business.

The Termocamaçari plant has an installed capacity of 138 MW. In 2013, it generated an average of 4.043 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the National Interconnected System (SIN). In 2014, generation reached an average of 4.761 megawatts (MW), through the 21 owned and leased thermoelectric plants that make up the generating complex.
