The gasoline that will be produced by Petrobras will have new specifications, with a quality similar to the fuel produced in the USA and Europe.

According to Anelise Lara, director of Refining and Gas at Petrobras, during a live by the Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering held last night (23/06), Brazil will produce gasoline with a quality similar to the fuel sold in Europe and the USA in the next semester . As of August, new specifications at Petrobras refineries will come into effect. As a result, the price of fuel will increase. Among the advantages, according to the directors, are the reduction of consumption and better vehicle performance.

Anelise pointed out that Petrobras' refineries are already prepared to meet the new gasoline quality regulation, approved in January by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).

“Petrobras is now ready to produce this new gasoline. The new specification is welcome and will bring the quality of fuel sold in Brazil closer to that of the American and European markets. The intrinsic quality of gasoline will increase in terms of octane and specific mass, which means more efficient fuel and better protection for vehicle engines. This will allow for a reduction in gasoline consumption per kilometer driven”, says Anelise Lara.

The director also stated that the economic viability of renewable diesel — a technology patented by Petrobras that makes it possible to produce the derivative from the co-processing of petroleum with vegetable oils in refineries — will depend on the regulation of the new product.

Petrobras, together with the ANP, hopes that the sale of green diesel, which will begin to be tested at the Repar refinery, in Araucária (PR), as of July, can generate decarbonization credits (Cbios) — an instrument of the federal program RenovaBio for the offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. Each CBio is equivalent to reducing the emission of 1 ton of carbon resulting from the replacement of fossil fuel consumption by renewable ones.

“For them [green diesel and aviation biokerosene] to be economically viable, they need to be regulated. This is the most relevant point for us to continue with the production of green diesel”, said the executive, during an online event.

O RenovaBio sets emission targets for each fuel distributor, which must purchase CBios from renewable fuel producers.
