Rescue Teams Remove More Than 30 Crew Members After a Fireball Engulfs the Tanker Stena Immaculate, Carrying Aviation Fuel. Authorities Fear Devastating Environmental Impact in the Humber Estuary, While Experts Assess Possible Maritime Safety Failures.
On Monday morning, a tanker and a container ship collided off the coast of Yorkshire, resulting in an explosion followed by a large fire. The incident occurred approximately 16 kilometers from the Humber estuary, near the city of Hull. The US-flagged tanker Stena Immaculate was struck by the Solong, a Portuguese-flagged vessel, while anchored.
Images from the scene show plumes of black smoke rising from the wreckage, with flames engulfing both vessels. Emergency teams, including the Coast Guard, firefighters, and civil vessels, were mobilized to rescue the crew members and control the situation. Witnesses reported seeing a “huge fireball” moments after the impact.
Rescue and Evacuation of the Tanker Crews
At least 32 crew members were removed from the vessels and taken to shore, according to information from the Port of Grimsby East. However, the exact number of crew members aboard each vessel has not been confirmed, and some individuals remain missing. The Coast Guard rescue helicopter was called in to assist in the search for possible victims.

Stena Bulk, the owner of the Stena Immaculate tanker, stated that all its crew is safe. However, the severity of the fire and the extent of the damage are still unknown. The Solong, for its part, was carrying commercial cargo and also sustained significant structural damage.
Risk of Environmental Disaster on the Coast of the United Kingdom
The collision of the tanker and the container ship caused a leak of aviation fuel into the sea, heightening fears of an environmental disaster. The Stena Immaculate was carrying A-1 kerosene, highly flammable, which resulted in multiple explosions. The spilled fuel has already been spotted in the water and could affect marine life and ecosystems in the area.
Her Majesty’s Coast Guard has stated that it is conducting an assessment of the environmental impacts and studying containment measures to prevent the spill from spreading. Experts warn that contamination could be severe, requiring a swift response to minimize damage to the environment.
Possible Causes of the Accident
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has sent a team to the scene to analyze the causes of the collision. Preliminary information indicates that the Stena Immaculate was anchored at the time of the impact, which reduces its liability in the incident. Experts suggest that a navigational failure by the Solong may have been the main factor leading to the accident.
Christopher Parry, a retired admiral of the Royal Navy, commented that “all maritime laws dictate that vessels must maintain constant vigilance to avoid collisions.” Should it be confirmed that the tanker was anchored, responsibility could fall on the crew of the Portuguese cargo ship.
