Petroquímica Braskem signed a 20-year agreement with EDF Renewables for the construction of a wind power plant located in Bahia.

Braskem announced this Thursday (14th), the closing of a purchase agreement for wind power with EDF Renewables do Brasil, which operates in the clean energy segment. In a statement sent to the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM), Braskem stated that the contract contributes to making the installation of a new wind power plant in Bahia possible, contributing to the energy transition to clean energy sources in the country and ensuring the supply of energy to Petroquímica for about 20 years, starting in 2024.

Braskem closed other wind energy contracts in Brazil

The petrochemical company points out that, in addition to this contract with EDF Renewables for the construction of the plant in Bahia, the company has already closed another 4 focused on long-term wind energy and solar energy, reaching more than 150 average MW of energy from these sources, which represent around 30% of the electricity portfolio purchased in the country.

According to Braskem, the contracts, including that of EDF Renewables for its plant in Bahia, put the company close to reaching the reduction target of 2,2 million tons of CO2, contributing to the goal of reducing scope 15 and 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 2% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Petroquímica Braskem receives sustainability certification at its units in Bahia

This month, the company received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification for the use of circular and renewable raw materials in the production of resins and chemicals at its units in Camaçari, Bahia. From now on, these plants will be able to use alternative raw materials in their production processes, such as pyrolysis oil or circular oil, which is made from pyrolysis, a chemical process.

Winning the certification is part of the petrochemical company's efforts to eliminate plastic waste. As such, the company will expand its portfolio of recycled products to include 300 tons of thermoplastic resins and chemicals with recycled content by 2025 and 1 million tons of these products by the beginning of the next decade.

The company also plans to eliminate 1,5 million tons of plastic waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills, incineration or otherwise released into the environment. According to Braskem, the document also represents the continuity and expansion of the permission granted to the company to advance in the manufacture and commercialization of industrial products from the circular raw material.

Meet Braskem and EDF Renewables

Braskem was founded in 2002 through the integration of six companies from the Mariani Group and the Odebrecht and is currently the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the largest producer of polypropylene in the United States. Its production is focused on PE, PP and PVC resins, in addition to basic chemical inputs such as ethylene, butadiene, propylene, toluene, benzene, chlorine, soda and solvents, among others. In this way, the company has the most complete portfolio on the market, including green polyethylene, produced from sugarcane, which is completely renewable.

Already EDF Renewables is a leading global renewable energy company with gross installed capacity of 15,6 GW, focusing primarily on wind energy and solar energy. The company is present in 20 countries and manages the development and construction of sustainable energy projects, as well as the operation and maintenance of parks.
