Return Of The Peugeot 208 GTi In 2026 Marks New Phase Of The Model In The Electric Segment, Proving That Sportiness And Sustainability Can Go Hand In Hand.

Peugeot has announced the return of the iconic GTi version of the compact hatch 208, now fully electric. The reveal was made by Alain Favey, CEO of the brand, in an interview with the British site Autocar. Scheduled to hit the market in 2026, the new Peugeot e-208 GTi promises to revive the sporty spirit that has marked generations since the debut of the GTi line in the 1980s — this time, with zero emissions and high performance.

The model is expected to combine the bold design characteristic of the series with a high-performance electric motor, reinforcing Peugeot’s commitment to electrifying its fleet. The new generation of the sports model will be equipped with more powerful batteries and technologies inspired by Formula E, a category in which the manufacturer has heavily invested. The proposal is clear: to unite nostalgia, sportiness, and sustainability in one car.

The Return Of The Peugeot 208 GTi

The decision to bring the model back to the automotive market marks a decisive step for the French company toward sustainable mobility, without leaving behind the sporty touch that made it famous.

The rebirth of the Peugeot 208 GTi, which began with the legendary Peugeot 208 and continued with models like the 208 GTi 2012 and the special model for the 30th anniversary, now evolves with a new dimension: adrenaline-filled performance without emitting polluting gases.

The electric vehicle will share its platform with the Abarth600e, another iconic model from the Stellantis group, and promises to deliver around 240 horsepower, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6 seconds, and an incredible range of 320 km due to the equipping of a 51 kWh battery and optimized aerodynamics.

In the current scenario, the new model will have to compete with high-level rivals such as the Alpine A290 and the Electric Cooper JCW. Additionally, the arrival of this new version could boost the development of other high-performance electric variants within the group, such as a possible Opel Corsa Electric in a sporty configuration.

Gasoline Model May Also Have Confirmed Return

Although the focus of the return of the Peugeot 208 GTi is on the electric variant, Alain Favey does not rule out the possibility that, in the future, there could be a return of the GTi with a combustion engine, keeping open the possibility of meeting diversified customer needs.

Thus, the Peugeot e-208 GTi prepares to demonstrate that the pleasure of driving and the fun of being behind the wheel can find a new dimension, even in the era of the energy transition toward a more sustainable future.

In Brazil, the Peugeot 208 was sold in its sporty version, the e-GT, also 100% electric; however, without the design tweaks of the 2025 line and with less punch than the GTi. The mechanical set of the model available in the Brazilian market had an electric motor of 136 hp and 25.6 kgfm of torque, sufficient numbers to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds.

Will The Brazilian Automotive Market Receive The New Model?

The Peugeot 208 e-GT ceased to be sold in mid-2024 and, since then, has not had any more electrified versions. For Brazil, a mild hybrid version is expected, but the adjustments required in Stellantis’s Bio Hybrid system have delayed the launch that had been planned for the first half of this year.

The arrival of the e-208 GTi is unlikely here, given that the e-GT offered in Brazil had low sales numbers. The price of the novelty is quite above ideal in an automotive market where the Chinese are increasingly present, with high technology and competitive prices.

It is worth mentioning that Favey also highlighted that, although the return of the GTi vehicle in the e-208 is the first step, the expansion of the GTi line or the introduction of sporty models with combustion engines will depend on the feedback from the brand’s consumers.
