Government of Minas Gerais Advances in Historic Project by Selecting Consortium for Construction of the Bridge over the São Francisco River, Boosting Regional Development

The Government of Minas Gerais announced, through the Department of Highways (DER-MG), the lowest financial proposal for the resumption of the works on the bridge over the São Francisco River, located in the city of the same name, in the North of the state.

The PRSF consortium, composed of the companies S A Paulista de Construções e Comércio, Azevedo e Travassos Infraestrutura Ltda, and the Argentine Benito Roggio e Hijos Sociedad Anônima, submitted the offer of R$ 158.5 million, corresponding to 91.17% of the initial value, which was estimated at R$ 173.8 million.

Six companies participated in the bidding process conducted online. After the presentation of the financial proposal, DER-MG evaluated and qualified the PRSF consortium, now awaiting the appeal period for the official confirmation of the winning company and issuance of the service order.

This bridge is considered a long-awaited advancement, as it will eliminate the use of ferries for crossing and promises to improve the quality of life for the residents of São Francisco and the neighboring city of Pintópolis, connected by the MG-402 highway.

Structure of the New Bridge in Minas Gerais

The bridge will be one of the largest in Minas Gerais, with a length of 1,120 meters and a width of 13.8 meters, part of Provias, an infrastructure program that is the largest roadworks package of the last decade.

In addition to the construction of the bridge, the notice also includes an access variant with improvements and paving over a stretch of 3.06 kilometers between São Francisco and Pintópolis.

Provias has secured funding, ensuring that the construction will be completed without interruptions. This crossing, in addition to facilitating transportation and mobility in the region, is expected to boost local economic development, easing the movement of people and the flow of products.

History and Interruptions

The works were halted after the termination of the contract with the company previously responsible for the construction. The decision, made by the Government of Minas in a meeting involving representatives of the company and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG), was due to the company’s recurring inability to progress at the pace contractually stipulated.

On that occasion, DER-MG determined that the construction company complete the transportation of materials stored on-site within 60 days and finish ongoing concrete elements. This aimed to reduce financial and material losses due to the interruption of works.

Paving of the Pintópolis-Urucuia Stretch

In addition to the bridge, DER-MG is investing in the paving of the MG-402 and MG-202 highways, along the stretch connecting Pintópolis to Urucuia, totaling 73 kilometers divided into two lots.

The first lot comprises 21.7 kilometers, while the second encompasses 51.4 kilometers. It is expected that by the end of 2024, about 30 kilometers will be completed.

These works will connect the North and Northwest regions of Minas to the valleys of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri and to the south of Bahia. The expectation is that this new paving will facilitate the transport of grains, one of the economic pillars of the region, benefiting approximately 100,000 people directly.

With the construction of the bridge over the São Francisco River and the paving of the stretch to Urucuia, the state government expects to boost the socioeconomic development of the region, reducing travel time and improving the transport of goods.
