Por que não existe uma ponte entre Amapá e Brasil? Acesso ao estado ainda é via balsa ou avião

Amapá, Isolated Geographically by Rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, Faces Unique Connectivity Challenges with Brazil, Depending on Ferries and Flights for Access, While Bridge and Road Projects Remain Incomplete, Reflecting the Complex Interaction between Economic Development, Isolation, and Environmental Conservation.

Amapá, the only one of the 26 Brazilian states, remains isolated from the rest of the country. Despite the vast road networks that cross Brazil, reaching Amapá requires a 26-hour ferry ride or direct flights due to its surroundings dominated by significant bodies of water such as the Amazon River, Oiapoque River, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The only existing bridge, the Brazil-France bi-national bridge, connects Amapá to French Guiana, but it does not facilitate road transit to Suriname or other Brazilian states.

But Why Is There No Bridge Between Amapá and Brazil?

Amapá faces significant geographical and economic barriers. With 72% of its territory covered by dense forests and an economy centered on extractivism, the state lacks adequate road infrastructure. The weak industrial presence and geographical isolation hinder economic development and integration with the rest of Brazil.

Although there have been attempts to build bridges, such as the unfinished bridge over the Jari River, infrastructure projects in Amapá often face bureaucratic and financial obstacles. Development potential, such as the promising project of the new pre-salt in the Blue Amazon, could change the economic landscape, but it is still subject to environmental and technical approvals.

Projects That Are Still Unfinished

Initiated in 2002, the bridge project over the Jari River aimed to connect Laranjal do Jari in Amapá to Monte Dourado in Pará. This project was a hope to integrate Amapá with the rest of Brazil, facilitating transport and trade. However, after more than two decades, construction is halted with only 39% of the work completed. Financial and management issues, including allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds, have been significant obstacles. The construction, which has already consumed millions in public resources, is inactive, with only a few pillars erected and no forecast for resumption.

The BR-156 highway is another critical project for Amapá’s connectivity. With start in 1932, the road was supposed to link the south to the north of the state, crossing from Laranjal do Jari to Oiapoque. Despite decades of work, much of the highway remains incomplete or unpaved, with only 100 km paved between 1985 and 1990. The highway faces similar execution, funding, and management challenges, preventing its completion and leaving the population dependent on alternative routes, such as ferry rides, for transportation.

Never-Ending Crossroads?

Amapá remains at a crossroads, seeking to balance economic development and environmental preservation. The completion of projects such as the bridge over the Jari River and BR-156 highway could finally connect the state to the rest of Brazil, promoting progress and opening new pathways for sustainable development.
