2023 VW ID. Buzz, affectionately known as Electric Kombi, Enters Series Production by German Automaker Volkswagen to Mark the Return of an Icon!

After decades of teasing with concepts, some more realistic than others, the multinational vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen has finally pressed the Start button on the rebirth of the legendary Kombi. The Buzz identity is coming hot off the production line of the German automaker in Hanover, where the factory has been revamped over the past two years to accommodate the reborn icon.

Volkswagen aims to assemble up to 15,000 units throughout 2022. The volume will massively increase to 130,000 vehicles as production hits full speed. To ensure that electric motor assembly began smoothly, around 4,000 employees received specialized training.

According to the German automaker, deliveries to European customers will begin at the end of September this year, while U.S. buyers are in for a long wait, as shipments won’t start until late 2023.

The old Kombi, that vehicle which became famous in the hippie era, retains much of the body shape and straight-line style. It also showcases the characteristic two-tone finish of Volkswagen electric cars, the diamond-patterned bumper, and the LED headlight assembly.

Electric Kombi Can Be Charged in 30 Minutes

Volkswagen points out that the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo are well-equipped as standard, featuring a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery (82 kWh gross) – the largest available among all ID models so far – and a rear-mounted electric motor capable of delivering 150 kW (204 hp) of power and 31.6 kgfm of torque.

The combined WLTP range is up to 423 km for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Pro and 425 km for the ID. Buzz Cargo, with a WLTP fuel consumption of 20.6 kWh/100 km and 20.4 kWh/100 km, respectively. The battery can be charged from 5 to 80% of its capacity in about 30 minutes using a DC fast charging station with a maximum charging power of up to 170 kW.

Both models also come with a 5.3″ digital instrument panel, an infotainment system with a 10″ screen, multifunction steering wheel, LED headlights, automatic climate control, keyless start, cruise control, and driver assistance/warning systems. Among them are Car2X, Park Distance Control, and the Front Assist emergency braking system — plus lane assist on the ID. Buzz Pro.

And it doesn’t stop there: the new electric ‘Kombi’ measures 4,712 mm in length, 2,988 mm in wheelbase, 1,985 mm in width, and 1,937 mm in height. The capacity for cargo is 1,121 liters and 2,205 liters with the rear seats folded down. In addition, it will be available in a five-passenger version and a three-person commercial version with a fixed wall including glass, with a cargo capacity of 3,900 liters and a payload of 650 kilograms. It also supports a gross weight of up to 3,000 kg.

The U.S. version will have a longer wheelbase to accommodate three rows of seats. Although VW currently produces only a rear-wheel-drive model with a single electric motor, the ID. Buzz will gain a more powerful derivative equipped with AWD, featuring a dual motor setup. Expect something close to 300 hp, considering that’s what the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX offer.

So, How Much Will the Return of This Iconic VW Cost?

Prices start at €64,581 (€67,910 for the standard wheelbase 5-seater ID. Buzz Pro model, though the environmental discount in Germany of up to €7,500 lowers the final price to €56,606 (R$ 296,100)). The ID. Buzz Cargo, the cargo version, starts at €54,430 or €46,455 (R$ 243,050) after the environmental discount in Germany – prices include 19% VAT.

Anticipated in Brazil, the electric Kombi is expected to launch here in passenger and cargo versions, according to our findings some time ago. However, Volkswagen has not yet provided official word on dates or confirmation of launch but it is a strategic model in its electric vehicle lineup and should not be left out when the German brand’s electrification advances here.

Chinese Automaker Clones Iconic Volkswagen Kombi Shortly After Outrageously Manufacturing an Electric Beetle Copy

The Chinese industry has yet to abandon some old habits, and the multinational Volkswagen was not at all pleased with the electric car manufacturer ORA, which is part of the Great Wall Motors group. The brand recently presented a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Named ORA Punk Cat, the vehicle bears the same traits as the iconic car from the VW automaker. Not to mention, another Chinese automaker, SongSang Motors, cloned the iconic Kombi. Will this stir up some trouble?

The Chinese automaker launched a new model inspired by an already existing one. In this case, it is the SongSang Motors that unveiled the SS Summer, a van with a retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2.

You can see in the video below that ORA was inspired – not to say it brazenly copied – the features of the Volkswagen Beetle in its new Punk Cat. The curved hood design, rounded headlights, and the design of the rear, complete with oval taillights, evoke the old Beetle.

The interior of the ORA Punk Cat also resembles the Beetle, as it features a three-spoke steering wheel and instruments and gauges in a circular format. Despite the retro vibe, the interior offers a multimedia screen and a cantilevered center console.

However, the creation of this car with a “time machine feel,” as stated by ORA itself, did not please Volkswagen at all, and the German automaker said it intends to sue the Chinese automaker!
