Sale of the Petrochemical Plant in Suape and Rnest Alongside the Inauguration of the Santos-Suape Express Route Are Factors of Optimism for the Industrial Complex to Increase Its Leadership in National Cargo Transportation
The Port of Suape is the sole leader in cargo transportation among Brazilian ports (cabotage); however, the complex currently transporting 5.8 million tons of cargo will have an express route interconnecting it to the Port of Santos starting in September.
In addition to this new possibility, the Suape Industrial Complex expects to increase its transported volume by the end of the year due to two major transactions in the region.
One of them is the sale of Petroquímica Suape to the Mexican company Alpek, and the other is the sale of the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest) which is part of Petrobras’ divestment list.

The Director of Operations at the Port of Suape emphasized the infrastructure of the project, such as its tank farm capable of storing several products, allowing products to arrive via domestic navigation and then be transferred to international destinations through deep-sea navigation.
According to him, the arrival of Tecon 2, which will allow for the docking of larger ships, will also contribute to the increase in the port’s production.
The Santos – Suape Express Route
Scheduled for this month of July but expected to start operations only in September, the Santos – Suape express route will allow for greater agility in cargo transportation between the cities (a maximum of 3 days) and will spark interest in moving other types of cargo.
The cabotage market is thriving with the increase in cargo volume at the Port of Suape. A decrease of 2 to 3% per year in the road modal, which serves about 70% of the sector, has already been observed.
In the opinion of the director of Cone, a business condominium with 46 installed companies, cabotage has emerged as a good option for cargo transportation, and its growth of 20% to 25% in container movement is closely related to the low reduction in road freight, which often does not cover the time the product is idle when problems arise.
