John Bolton Warns That US Deal Will Make Iran a “Better Partner” for Russia and Represent a Threat to the World!
Iran announced that it received the US response regarding the ‘final’ proposal for a nuclear deal presented by the European Union, marking a new step in the diplomatic exchange that has developed in recent weeks to revive the pact signed in 2015, which could place the Islamic Republic’s oil back on the export market. The news reverberated and directly impacted the price of oil, which fell by as much as US$ 6 a barrel on August 30.
“[We started] a detailed review of the comments made to the text by the American counterpart,” said the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanani. The Ministry went on to state that “Iran will issue its reaction [to the US proposal] through the EU [which coordinates the talks between Washington and Tehran].”
The agreement had been stalled since 2018, following the US withdrawal ordered by US President Donald Trump. Talks to save the nuclear pact began in April 2021 in Vienna, with indirect participation from the US. Between August 4 and 8, the last round of these negotiations took place, following the presentation of a ‘final’ proposal by the EU, accepted by the Iranian side. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, stated that “what can be negotiated has been negotiated and is now in a legal text.”
Biden Administration Committing an ‘Impressive Mistake’ by Resuming Nuclear Deal with Iran
Former President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, said that the Biden administration is making an “impressive mistake” by trying to return to a nuclear deal with Iran, arguing that the agreement would make Iran a “better partner” for Russia and pose a threat not only to the Middle East region but also to the world.
“I think the immediate consequence, obviously, will be the unfreezing of billions of dollars of Iranian assets, which will return under their control, with their discretion to spend it on their nuclear program, their support for international terrorism in the Middle East and beyond,” Bolton said to Dan Murphy of CNBC. “It’s really an impressive mistake by the Biden administration.”
The US National Security Council rebutted Bolton, saying that Iran would not receive any sanctions relief without “real” inspections.
If the original 2015 agreement were to return, “Iran would receive no sanctions relief absent significant and verifiable restrictions imposed on its nuclear program and a return to the more comprehensive inspections [that] the regime already negotiated,” said National Security Council spokeswoman, Becky Farmer.
The resurrection of the deal depends on a point of contention — a long-standing investigation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding traces of uranium at three of Iran’s undeclared nuclear sites years ago. Tehran wants the investigation to be closed, something that the agency and Western governments oppose.
Islamic Republic Was the Fifth Largest Oil Producer Among OPEC Members in 2020
Last year, the signatories of the original agreement began the first of what would become many rounds of negotiations in Vienna to revive the deal. The Trump administration withdrew from the agreement in 2018.
Under the 2015 agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA, Iran was to dismantle much of its nuclear program and allow more international inspections in exchange for economic sanctions relief.
Iran, which was the fifth largest oil producer among OPEC members in 2020, could increase additional crude oil supplies after an agreement materializes. This would provide some relief to a global market facing an energy crisis.
Partnership Between Russia, China, and Iran Would Have Global Implications
Bolton warned that lifting sanctions could lead Iran to establish closer ties with Russia.
“I think it makes sense that, relieved of international sanctions, a wealthier and stronger Iran will gravitate toward Russia. … By helping to free Iran from economic sanctions, it makes them a better partner for Russia.”
Bolton noted that Russia and China have an existing “enter” and that a three-way partnership between Russia, China, and Iran would have global implications.
