The Mayor of Sorocaba Declares State of Emergency to Combat Intoxications, Authorizes Invasion of Suspected Locations, Imposes Fines of Up to R$ 1 Million and Allows Immediate Purchase of Antidotes Given the Increase of Severe Cases in the Country
The mayor of Sorocaba declares a state of emergency after confirmation of cases of intoxication from drinks adulterated with methanol. The decree, signed by Rodrigo Manga (Republicans), authorizes municipal agents to invade locations suspected of producing or storing illegal products, impose fines that can reach R$ 1 million, and seize the materials found.
The measure also includes the immediate purchase of 200 vials of antidote to supply local health units. According to the city hall, the decision is preventive and seeks to provide agility in addressing a problem that already concerns national authorities, with dozens of cases under investigation in different states.
What the State of Emergency Decree Provides
With the signing of the decree, the Sanitary Surveillance and the Municipal Civil Guard are authorized to act directly in suspected establishments without the need to wait for judicial authorization.

Havan will leave the shopping mall in Blumenau to inaugurate something that the chain has never done before: a megastore in half-timbered style in the Historic Center of the city, which is expected to be completed in May and change the landscape of local retail.
The goal is to accelerate the response in situations of imminent risk to public health, especially when it involves clandestine factories of alcoholic beverages.
The document also stipulates that those caught selling or storing products with methanol may be fined amounts up to R$ 1 million, in addition to having goods confiscated.
The city hall argues that the measure is essential to protect the population and reduce the risk of deaths.
The National Impact of the Methanol Crisis
The decree arises in a context of growing concern in the country. According to the latest data, there are already 113 suspected cases of methanol poisoning in different states.
Of these, 101 occurred in São Paulo, where 11 have been confirmed and 90 are still under investigation. There are also reports in Pernambuco, Bahia, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Federal District.
Health authorities have also confirmed 12 deaths linked to the consumption of adulterated beverages, one of which has already been proven in São Paulo and another 11 are under analysis.
The increase in notifications has led municipalities and state governments to reinforce enforcement measures, tightening the crackdown on distributors and clandestine factories.
The Role of the City Hall and Legal Limits
According to Mayor Rodrigo Manga, the action aims to ensure that the municipality can react quickly to reports, without solely relying on coordination with the Civil and Military Police.
“Our focus is on clandestine factories and storage locations that present an immediate risk,” stated the manager.
However, experts call attention to the legal limits.
Delegate André Santos Pereira, president of the Association of Police Delegates of São Paulo, acknowledges the validity of the decree as an exercise of administrative power, but emphasizes that criminal investigations require judicial decision.
For him, it is necessary to clearly define the responsibilities of each agency to avoid jurisdictional conflicts.
Emergency and Public Health in Sorocaba
The decree also authorizes the immediate purchase of antidotes, essential in the treatment of severe methanol intoxications.
The city hall reported that the emergency care units in the city will receive 200 vials of the medication, ensuring safety stocks to address possible cases.
The measure is seen as preventive action in a scenario of real risk, as Sorocaba is in one of the most affected states by the notifications.
The reinforcement of the local health system, combined with the intensification of enforcement, forms the central axis of the strategy adopted by the municipality.
By declaring a state of emergency, the mayor of Sorocaba places the city at the forefront against beverages adulterated with methanol.
The initiative seeks to ensure prompt enforcement, punish those responsible, and increase medical response capacity.
