São Paulo City Hall Will Adopt Renewable Energy in 186 Public Buildings, Including Hospitals and Educational Centers, to Save R$ 66 Million in 5 Years

On October 31, 2025, São Paulo City Hall announced an innovative initiative to promote the use of renewable energy in 186 public buildings spread throughout the city, including hospitals, educational centers, and subprefectures. The action aims to save approximately R$ 66 million over the next five years, demonstrating the municipal administration’s commitment to sustainability and significant public spending reduction.

Cost Savings with Renewable Energy in São Paulo City Hall Public Buildings

The City Hall of São Paulo plans to reduce electricity costs for these public buildings by an average of 30%, which, despite representing only 6% of municipal units, account for about one-third of the total energy consumption of the administration.

With this action, a cumulative savings of R$ 66 million is expected by 2030, utilizing clean sources such as solar and wind energy, biomass, biogas, and small hydropower plants. This savings reinforces the City Hall’s role in optimizing resources and ensuring efficiency in the use of renewable energy.

In addition to financial gains, the transition to renewable energy will have a significant environmental impact, with an estimated reduction of 16,000 tons of CO₂ emitted over the five years of the contract.

This reduction in atmospheric emissions is equivalent to the positive effect of about 400,000 mature trees that naturally absorb carbon, contributing to combating climate change and improving air quality in the city of São Paulo.

To implement this initiative, the City Hall held a tender in the Free Contracting Environment (ACL), divided into two lots with contracts valid for five years.

The company Matrix Electric Energy Trading S/A won the bidding, which had seven participants, offering the best price for the supply and management of renewable energy in 186 public buildings.

The estimated contract value was R$ 110.2 million, with an additional savings of R$ 12.3 million compared to initial forecasts, highlighting the efficiency in selecting the supplier.

The 186 public buildings covered by the project are located in various regions of the city, with the highest concentration in the East, South, and North zones, including hospitals, Unified Educational Centers (CEUs), and subprefectures.

These units represent the largest energy consumers among municipal buildings, making the adoption of renewable energy fundamental for the modernization of public infrastructure, sustainability improvement, and reduction of operational costs.

The increasing use of renewable energy by São Paulo City Hall brings various integrated benefits that go beyond financial savings.
