The Postal Service Faces A Serious Financial Crisis After Posting A Loss Of R$ 4.3 Billion In The First Half Of 2025. Government May Be Pressured To Intervene To Ensure The Continuity Of The State-Owned Company.
The Postal Service suffered a record loss of R$ 4.3 billion in the first half of 2025, further worsening its already fragile financial situation. Compared to the same period last year, the loss was more than three times greater, putting the company’s sustainability at risk. With declining revenues and significant increases in costs, especially with personnel and administrative expenses, the crisis may force the government to intervene with a restructuring or financial injection to avoid imminent bankruptcy.
The impact of the loss on the Postal Service is significant, not only for the company’s workers but also for the national economy, as the state-owned company plays a crucial role in Brazil’s logistics system. The government now faces an important decision on how to address this situation and save the state-owned company from a possible irreversible crisis.
What Caused The Loss?
The Postal Service is facing a decline of 11.8% in revenues, down from R$ 9.283 billion to R$ 8.185 billion. This decrease is related to a number of factors, including the implementation of the controversial “t-shirt tax”, which increased the Import Tax on international purchases of up to US$ 50. Additionally, the company had to bear high costs for personnel and administrative expenses, further exacerbating costs.

Brazil produces too much clean energy and doesn’t know what to do with it: over 20% of solar and wind capacity was wasted in 2025 while investors flee and 509 renewable generation projects were abandoned in the last year.

Piauí will produce a new fuel that replaces diesel without needing to change anything in the truck’s engine and reduces pollutant gas emissions by half: truck drivers from all over the Northeast are already celebrating the news that will arrive later this decade.

A new Brazilian shopping center worth R$ 400 million will be built in an area equivalent to more than 4 football fields, featuring 90 stores, 5 cinemas, a supermarket, a college, and parking for 1,700 cars, potentially generating 3,000 jobs.
These factors, combined with the reduction in demand for traditional services and the impact of changes in the delivery and e-commerce market, resulted in a liquidity crisis that directly affects the operation of the Postal Service and its ability to generate profit.
The Crisis Deepens: Resignation And Expectations Of Intervention
In the midst of this critical financial situation, the president of the Postal Service, Fabiano Silva dos Santos, resigned in July but remains in office until a solution is found for the crisis. The federal government, in light of the severity of the scenario, is being pressured to take measures to prevent the state-owned company from reaching a point of financial collapse. Among the possibilities, there is speculation about a financial injection to ensure that the Postal Service’s operations are not interrupted, as well as a possible restructuring of the company.
The first quarter of 2025 had already reported a loss of R$ 1.72 billion, and the second quarter did nothing but deepen the crisis, with an additional loss of R$ 2.64 billion. The company’s future is increasingly uncertain, and the prospects for recovery are difficult, given that the necessary adjustments to cut costs and improve efficiency are not simple or quick.
What Is At Stake For Brazil?
The financial crisis of the Postal Service puts at stake not only the future of the state-owned company but also the model of public logistics in Brazil. The company, which has been essential in mail distribution and postal services for decades, now faces challenges from the modernization of the market and increasing competition from private companies. Its decline could open a significant gap in the package and mail delivery service, particularly affecting citizens in more remote and rural areas.
Possible Solutions And Challenges Ahead
The government will need to act quickly to restore confidence in the operations of the Postal Service, which may involve measures such as internal reforms to reduce spending, public-private partnerships to improve logistics efficiency, and perhaps an immediate financial boost. The challenge will be how to ensure that the sustainability of the state-owned company does not solely depend on government resources, but that it becomes capable of competing in the new package delivery and postal services market.
The record loss of R$ 4.3 billion by the Postal Service is a clear sign that the company needs urgent changes to ensure its long-term survival. The government is facing a critical decision, which may involve an intervention to save the state-owned company or a deep restructuring to make it financially viable. What is at stake is the maintenance of an essential public service that affects millions of Brazilians daily.
