In addition to contributing to the environment, after all, it is a clean energy source, solar energy is still an important strategic ally for businesses in the industrial sector. This is because, with the installation of these systems, the industry can achieve significant reductions in production costs, motivated by the sharp drop in the energy bill, in addition to avoiding losses in the production system, since, with the integration of the solar storage system into this photovoltaic plant, which includes hybrid inverters and batteries, it is possible to achieve self-production and energy security.
In fact, it was the residential segment that propelled Brazil to 6th place globally among the countries with the highest solar energy production, according to data from Absolar (Brazilian Solar Energy Association). However, with the benefits achieved by these consumers, combined with the adverse effects caused by blackouts in various Brazilian regions, other market segments began to see the potential of this green energy.
“The industrial sector is beginning to understand the possibilities and potential for self-production of clean energy and, even more, with the energy security guaranteed by the storage system. Besides the benefit to the planet, there is the financial aspect. The savings on the energy bill is significant and, in the case of a blackout, an industrial plant can incur huge losses due to the interruption of energy supply for an extended period,” explains Gilberto Camargos, Executive Director of SolaX Power in Brazil, a leader in solar energy storage solutions and the first manufacturer to launch a hybrid inverter in the Asian market.

Conventional solar systems are connected to the grid and inject energy directly into the power grid and, thus, during blackouts, these systems do not guarantee energy supply. It is to solve this bottleneck that the photovoltaic system has evolved. Already present in several countries worldwide, hybrid inverters are now beginning to arrive in Brazil – which are the ‘brain’ of the system; in other words, solar system equipment can operate simultaneously with a power source (solar panels) and a battery bank. These devices allow solar energy to be stored in batteries for use during moments like blackouts, at night, or in rainy periods, for example.
“The popularization of energy storage systems is already a reality with very broad applications, ranging from simple storage of energy produced by photovoltaic generation for later use during times of higher energy costs, to use as backup systems for power outages provided by energy utilities,” highlights Enan Ornaghi, Technical Director of ABR Energias.
Solar Energy as a Business Strategy
Mindful of this scenario, Romanha Alimentos decided to incorporate the photovoltaic storage system into its plant located in Pinhais, the metropolitan region of Curitiba/PR. The project utilized equipment from SolaX Power, through ABR Energias – a pioneering distributor in the use and sale of SolaX equipment in Brazil.
The photovoltaic plant was installed on a site of more than 11,000 square meters, with a production capacity of 20 tons daily and 174 employees. The total investment was over R$ 3.8 million, approved through the Energy Efficiency Program of Copel (Paranaense Energy Company), regulated by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), and includes the installation of a solar generation photovoltaic plant, with about a thousand photovoltaic panels, in addition to an energy storage battery system.
Over two years, the company expects to record significant benefits in reducing operational costs and increasing production. “The expectation is to save around 80% on electricity costs currently consumed by the company,” explains César Kulpa, CEO of Romanha.
Choosing to include hybrid inverters and batteries, which allow for the storage of photovoltaic energy, was also motivated by an economic consideration. “We thought about reducing the consumption rate at the industrial process’s core, where the price charged per kWh can be 400% higher,” explains the CEO. The company’s plans for expansion indicate that soon, 100% of the energy consumed at the plant should be solar.
