Vale Project in Partnership with Green Energy Park Joins European Union’s List of Priority Investments Through Global Gateway Initiative
The Vale project, developed in partnership with Green Energy Park (GEP), which plans to build a facility for the production of green hydrogen in Brazil, was recently recognized and included by the European Union in the priority list of the Global Gateway initiative. The information was disclosed by the newspaper Valor Econômico.
The central aim of the project is to utilize renewable hydrogen to supply a large hot briquetted iron (HBI) production complex, also known as sponge iron, an essential component in the manufacturing of so-called “green steel.” As highlighted by the specialized portal Eixos, Vale’s project perfectly aligns with European efforts for energy transition, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from the global steel industry.

The Global Gateway initiative, as explained on Vale’s official website, was launched by the European Union in 2021 and aims to make total investments of up to €300 billion by 2027. Partnership Between Vale and Green Energy Park Advances
The partnership between Vale and Green Energy Park (GEP), announced in October 2024, is already advancing in technical and economic feasibility studies, according to Valor Econômico. Before being prioritized by the European Union, the initiative was already integrated into the Brazil Climate Investment and Ecological Transformation Platform (BIP), launched by the Brazilian government to stimulate sustainable business in the country.
How Does Green HBI Production Work?
The production of sponge iron (HBI) using green hydrogen is considered revolutionary by industry experts, according to the portal Eixos. In this process, renewable hydrogen is obtained through water electrolysis using electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind. The use of this technology eliminates the need for natural gas and coal, traditionally used, drastically reducing the carbon footprint in steel manufacturing.
