According to Retífica Projeto, the most common chronic defect appears when the oil light starts to flicker at idle. This sign may indicate that the engine is suffering from pressure loss, which, if not addressed quickly, can cause severe damage and require a complete overhaul.

And when we talk about a complete overhaul, we are entering a scenario of astronomical costs. The process involves the replacement of parts such as bearings, oil pump, chain kit, camshafts, and even balance shafts. Depending on the level of wear, the total cost can exceed R$ 30 thousand, reaching R$ 40 thousand if the cylinder head and other key components are compromised.

What Do Experts Say?

According to experts from Retífica Projeto, many of the TSI EA888 engines of Volkswagen Jetta that come in for maintenance have serious problems shortly after inspection. This occurs largely due to poor quality of replacement parts or even a lack of precise adjustments during assembly.

“The oil pressure defect is tricky because even after replacement of parts and repairs, the problem may come back,” says one of the mechanics at the shop. “We have already received cases where the engine was overhauled three or four times, and the owner is still suffering from the same defect.”

The problem seems to be concentrated in the lack of precision in the measurements of some new components, which, even when purchased directly from Volkswagen dealerships, show slight factory variations. Does Volkswagen Bear Any Blame?

Despite the constant reports of problems with the TSI EA888 Jetta engine, Volkswagen has not issued an official recall to address the issue. This has left many owners stranded, without support from the automaker. Specialized mechanics suggest that if the defect were addressed more transparently by the brand, Jetta owners could avoid exorbitant costs for overhauls.

The lack of support from Volkswagen in recognizing this defect as a manufacturing problem is, at the very least, concerning. Are we facing a chronic defect that could have been avoided since the production line?

Retífica Projeto points out that many clients need to return to the workshop for new repairs, even after spending significant amounts on the initial overhaul.

This happens because the oil pressure defect affects various components of the engine. Replacing parts may not be enough, and the problem may reappear if the engine is not assembled with extreme precision.
