Raízen, Part of the Shell Group, Wants to Build Three Mills Producing Ethanol Made From Bagasse and Sugarcane Straw
Cellulosic ethanol is made from sugarcane bagasse and straw. In Piracicaba (SP), the group already has a production mill for this type of fuel, which, according to the businessman, has a strong international demand due to the carbon sequestration it generates.
“We want to build three mills of this size, producing an additional 300 million liters of second-generation ethanol,” Ometto revealed. “Companies like Shell, Exxon-Mobil, Total, they all have a strong interest in acquiring this ethanol due to the carbon sequestration it offers.”
The technology for producing cellulosic ethanol originated from a partnership between Shell and the Canadian company Logen, specialized in biotechnology. In the last harvest (2019/20), the Piracicaba unit produced 226 liters of ethanol for every ton of dry biomass.
Raízen is the leading sugarcane ethanol manufacturer and the 4th largest company in Brazil and the largest individual exporter of sugarcane in the international market, and its activities encompass all different stages of its business, such as: “cultivation of sugarcane; manufacturing of sugar and ethanol; cogeneration of energy; logistics; transportation and distribution of fuels; export; and fuel retail through service stations operating under the Shell brand.”
