SUS Reference Hospitals Lead Ranking of the Best Public Hospitals in Brazil Released by Ibross.

A national ranking identified the best public hospitals in Brazil, revealing where the main units of care 100% SUS are located, which states concentrate SUS reference hospitals and why these institutions stand out in care quality.

The survey was conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Social Health Organizations (Ibross), with technical support from the Pan American Health Organization, the Ethics in Health Institute, the National Council of Health Secretaries, and the National Council of Municipal Health Secretaries.

The study evaluated recent data and selected 100 public units, which will now compete for the Best Public Hospitals in Brazil Award, with the final result expected in May.

Public Hospitals SUS Ranking Reveals Concentration in São Paulo

At the top of the ranking of public hospitals SUS, São Paulo appears with 30% of the selected units.

The São Paulo capital leads with nine recognized hospitals, while cities like Bauru and São Bernardo do Campo have two each.

Additionally, other São Paulo municipalities have one unit each, reinforcing the reach of the state and municipal high complexity network.

This prominence does not happen by chance. According to the organizers, the state has general and specialized hospitals with a high volume of care, good infrastructure, and consistent care indicators, which directly influences the position in the public hospitals SUS ranking.

Goiás and Other States Gain National Recognition

After São Paulo, Goiás occupies the second place, with 10 hospitals among the best in the country.

Next are Pará and Santa Catarina, with seven units each, followed by Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro, with six.

States like Paraná, Amazonas, Bahia, Federal District, Maranhão, and Minas Gerais also have a significant presence.

On the other hand, the survey highlights regional inequalities. Although there are representatives from all five regions, the North Region remains underrepresented: Acre, Amapá, Rondônia, and Roraima did not have hospitals included.

Alagoas, Mato Grosso, and Paraíba were also left off the list.

Ibross Public Hospitals: Technical Criteria and Exclusive Focus on SUS

According to Ibross, the ranking considers only federal, state, or municipal hospitals with full management by the Unified Health System, without care for private plans.

Units with more than 50 beds and registered production in the Hospital Information System between August 2024 and July 2025 were eligible.

Psychiatric hospitals and long-term care facilities were not included in the analysis.

Among the main criteria evaluated are hospital accreditation, occupancy rate, mortality indicators, availability of ICU beds, and average length of stay.

For the final stage, there will also be an independent patient satisfaction survey, compliance analysis, and efficiency evaluation, crossing care and financial resources.

SUS Reference Hospitals Compete for Unprecedented Award

The list of 100 selected hospitals composes the first edition of the Best Public Hospitals in Brazil Award, an initiative aimed at valuing excellence in public health.

From this group, the ten best public hospitals in the country will be chosen, considering clinical performance, management, and patient experience.

According to the organizers, the award aims to create objective quality parameters and stimulate the continuous improvement of the public network. Additionally, the recognition tends to strengthen good practices and guide public health policies.

Why the Ranking Matters for SUS Users

For the population, the public hospitals SUS ranking serves as a quality thermometer. It indicates where the best public hospitals in Brazil are located, highlights regional bottlenecks, and reinforces the importance of continuous investments in SUS.

For managers, the study provides comparable data that helps plan expansion, qualification, and efficiency.

Meanwhile, anticipation grows for the final announcement of the winners of the Best Public Hospitals in Brazil Award, which is expected to confirm in May which units have become national references in public health care.
