The Fire Incident at Petrobras Refinery Was Quickly Controlled, Causing No Casualties or Injuries
The Petrobras unit, Repar – President Getúlio Vargas Refinery, located in Araucária in the state of Paraná, registered a fire incident early Saturday morning (13), causing no injuries or material damage. According to the company, “the incident was immediately controlled by the unit’s own actions” and there was no need to deploy the fire department.

In a statement, the Brazilian state-owned company reported that the fire incident began after “an interruption in the startup procedure, which resulted in a small diesel leak,” during the resumption maneuvers of the UHDS (Diesel Hydrodesulfurization Unit) of the refinery. “The unit resumed operations on the same day. There were no damages to people, the environment, or facilities,” says Petrobras’ statement.
The FUP (Unique Federation of Petroleum Workers) reported the incident on the morning of this Tuesday (16) as evidence of the “precarization of work and the safety of refining operations, which will increase with the privatization of the plants.”

The federation stated that “at the time of the incident, only one operator was responsible for the entire unit. The worker had to call for reinforcements to control the situation,” according to a note released by the FUP, emphasizing that “fortunately, there were no injuries or damage to the facilities, according to information from Sindipetro-PR/SC (Union of Oil Workers of Paraná and Santa Catarina).”

Raízen, the giant ethanol producer in Brazil and owner of Ipiranga – Ultra gas stations, was in the running for President Getúlio Vargas (Repar) refinery in Paraná and Alberto Pasqualini (Refap) refinery in Rio Grande do Sul, both put up for sale by Petrobras.
On January 19, Petrobras reported that it was in negotiation with Ultrapar. The negotiations between Petrobras and the Ultra Group, which already has operations in the region, for the purchase of Refap are estimated between US$ 1.2 billion and US$ 1.4 billion.
