Despite Being Allies, Petrobras Decided to Deny the Request of the American Government for Having Other Plans. See More Below.
Representatives of the United States government recently consulted Brazil to question the feasibility of the country increasing oil production with Petrobras. However, the request made by the United States was denied by the representative entities of Brazil. This news was first reported by the international news agency Reuters. It was March of this year when the consultation took place, at the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
United States Turns to Brazil to Request Increase in Oil Production and Petrobras Refuses
The consultation with Brazil took place this year, in mid-March, right at the initial phase of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Being among the largest global consumers of oil and other derivatives, the United States was somewhat concerned about the oil supply and especially with prices, which remain extremely high, causing a significant impact on consumers, both in Brazil and around the world. Initially, the inquiry was made by the U.S. State Department to the Federal Government of Brazil.
After this occurrence, the United States decided to speak directly with who could be the main interested party: Petrobras, since the oil company is largely responsible for a significant portion of oil and gas production throughout Brazil. In response to the U.S. State Department, Petrobras denied the request made by the American government.

United States Responds Regarding the Request for Increased Oil Production in Brazil
Following Petrobras’ response, the U.S. State Department decided to comment on the news given by the state-owned company, released to the press shortly after the proposal made by the U.S. government.
In response, the American government did not deny that it consulted the Federal Government of Brazil. However, it did not go into further details. According to a representative of the U.S. State Department, in a statement, they said that they are doing everything possible with all of their allies and partners in order to mitigate the economic impacts due to Russian actions in other economies, such as Brazil.
For its part, Petrobras has other plans to increasingly boost its oil and gas production, initially at the national level. According to Petrobras’ perspective, in the next 5 years, oil production in Brazil is expected to increase by at least 0.5 million barrels produced per day.
