Partnership Between Large Companies Brought Innovative Boat Designed to Remove Oil Spots from the Sea and Was Presented During Rio Oil & Gas

One of the largest events in the oil and gas sector in the world, Rio Oil & Gas, brought various innovations from companies in the field. In this regard, Repsol Sinopec presented two of the latest projects developed in partnership with Tidewise. However, both projects are aimed at developing a model of an autonomous boat equipped with a drone and promise to revolutionize the offshore environment.

According to Marcelo Andreotti, Research and Development Manager at Repsol Sinopec Brazil, the goal with this creation is to perform oil maintenance and inspection at sea remotely. The boat has a range of up to 1100 kilometers and will help in identifying these spots and collecting samples. This way, it is possible to optimize and intensify care for the environment and reduce costs for these operations. Want to know more? Then keep reading.

USIS and ARIEL Projects Partner with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

The partnership projects between the companies are called Ariel (Autonomous Robot for Identification of Emulsified Liquids – Autonomous Robot for the Identification of Emulsified Liquids) and USIS (translator – Unmanned Submarine Inspection System). However, they were developed not only in partnership between Tidewise and Repsol Sinopec. After all, it involved the participation of laboratories from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

In this regard, the main studies and knowledge produced at the university are passed on to the technology company, Tidewise, which converts them into products for the offshore operator, Repsol Sinopec. Therefore, the partnership brings together the best expertise from each party to bring innovation and technology to the offshore field, with greater safety in inspections and lower costs.

Autonomous Boat with Drone Promises to Move on Its Own to Oil Spots at Sea

The autonomous boat with drone developed by this large partnership is capable of moving to oil spots resulting from spills at sea using remote coordinates. First, both receive the coordinates of the possible spot and head to the location. Then, the drone scans the area for the extent of the spot.

In parallel, the autonomous boat collects water samples for laboratory analysis regarding the composition of oil and water. Both projects have received important international awards for technological innovation. ARIEL received the ANP Innovation Award 2020 and also gained recognition from the Elia Group Open Innovation Challenge 2021.

Rebeca Elian, Head of Growth at Tidewise, notes that Tidewise is a startup highly focused on maritime solutions to contribute to environmental preservation. In this sense, the USIS and ARIEL projects fulfill a major purpose of bringing greater safety and cost reduction during the inspection and monitoring of oil spots at sea.

Repsol Sinopec Expects Investment of Over R$200 Million in the Coming Years During Rio Oil & Gas

Marcelo Andreotti, Research and Development Manager at Repsol Sinopec Brazil, announced an investment of over R$200 million in the next two years solely in Brazil. The goal is to stimulate the local market and expand its name and business presence in Brazil.

With this, the company aims to strengthen its presence in the Americas, bringing greater competitiveness to the sector. Additionally, innovation, one of the company’s purposes, will bring many advances to the national offshore scenario.
