Samarco Received Environmental License and Is Cleared to Resume Activities, Which Should Start in 2020 and Generate About 5,000 Job Openings in Espírito Santo
The return of the mining company Samarco, in the second half of 2020, is expected to create 5,000 job openings. The company, which received the green light to resume operations, rekindles optimism among authorities and the industry not only for new jobs but also for increases in arrecadação in Espírito Santo.
In addition to the return of the mining company’s plants, 130 companies will also reopen. Of those, 30 are service providers, including industries, and 100 are retail establishments, according to data from the Trade Federation (Fecomércio-ES) and the Industry Federation (Findes) of Espírito Santo.

According to José Lino Sepulcri, president of Fecomércio, 30% of the reopened companies are in Greater Vitória, 30% in Guarapari, and the remaining 40% in Anchieta, Iconha, and Cachoeiro de Itapemirim.
The estimate with the resumption of activities at Samarco is that 5,000 jobs will be created in these companies, with 500 direct and 4,500 indirect jobs. According to a statement made by the mining company, activities will resume by the end of 2020 and the restart will occur with only 26% of the productive capacity.

Among the companies that will be back are, for example, metalworking industries, machining, structural, assembly, and industrial maintenance, and Information Technology and transportation companies. Among the retail establishments, tool stores, electrical materials, sheets, construction materials, among others, will reopen, according to José Lino.
Dirceu Porto, Secretary of Finance of Anchieta, stated that it is noticeable that there are many closed commercial points and a decline in the movement of those that have remained open: “Just with this news, the city already breathes more easily.”
The president of the Chamber of Shopkeepers (CDL) of the municipality, Vinicius Alcântara, explained that most merchants are currently working with a reduced number of employees.

The company has had its activities suspended since 2015 due to the Mariana disaster in Minas Gerais, which left 19 dead and destroyed the village of Bento Rodrigues, causing damage also in the northern region of the state, with severe impacts on the population living along the Rio Doce.
The mining company reported that it intends to implement a new tailings filtration system, which should take 12 months from the issuance of the Corrective Operating License (LOC), which occurred on October 25. According to Rodrigo Vilela, president of the company, the new filtration technologies will enhance safety.
