With More Than 8 Thousand Tons of the Precious Metal, the Largest Gold Reserve in the World Has Been Firmly Planted in One Location for Years—Check It Out!

Central banks around the world have changed their strategies, and since 2010, they have been selling more than buying gold. By mid-2018, activity grew by about 36% in the sector, reaching 366 tons, a considerable increase compared to previous years. Today, the scenario is no different, as gold appreciates in the market year after year, remaining at the top of the most sold/bought metals globally. Since 2017, one country has held the 1st place in the ranking of the 10 central banks with the largest gold reserves in the world.

Largest Gold Reserve in the U.S.: Since 2017, the United States has held the 1st place with the largest gold reserve in the world, possessing more than 8 thousand tons of gold in its vaults. Following in second place is Germany, with over 3 thousand tons of gold, and Italy, with more than 2 thousand tons.

During the economic system of Bretton Woods, the U.S. offered to store gold in exchange for dollars. Reports indicate that at least 95% of the world’s gold reserve was kept with the Americans. Years later, it was found that the largest gold reserve in the U.S. was actually consolidated at that time, as more than 75% of foreign reserves remain in U.S. vaults.

In contrast, we have Russia as the largest buyer of gold, with over 224 tons, according to research by GFMS, a consultancy specialized in metal market analysis. The year 2018 saw strong demand for gold, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). The WGC found that demand in the first quarter of 2018 grew by about 42%, with total purchases of 116.5 tons of gold.

10 – India

The Reserve Bank of India stores about 557.3 tons of gold. This amount is equivalent to 9.9% of the country’s reserves. With a population of 1.25 billion people, India can be considered one of the major consumers of the metal.

09 – Netherlands

The Netherlands holds about 52% of its reserves in gold, equivalent to 612.45 tons. With security issues in Amsterdam, the country transferred around 139 thousand kilograms of gold to the Cash Center in 2022.

08 – Japan

Since the 1960s, Japan has been expanding its gold reserves, currently holding about 765.2 tons of the precious metal, which totals 2.4% of its foreign reserves.

07 – Switzerland

Switzerland has 6.7% of its reserves in gold, about 1,040 tons. During World War II, the country established itself as a trading center for gold, but that role is currently held by Hong Kong and China.

06 – Russia

Russia’s gold reserve currently holds about 970 tons, having established itself as the largest buyer of gold in the world.

05 – China

As the world’s largest gold producer, China currently possesses 2,257 tons of gold in its vaults.

04 – France

France holds approximately 2,435.7 tons in its gold reserve. Despite the decrease in investments in the metal, the country remains in 4th place in the ranking of the largest gold reserves in the world.

03 – Italy

In 3rd place, Italy currently holds about 2,451.8 tons of gold in its vaults. Unlike other countries, Italy has not seen many fluctuations in the value of its reserves.

02 – Germany

In 2nd place, Germany currently has 3,381 tons of gold, about 68.9% of its foreign reserves. In 2017, the German Central Bank announced that it would repatriate around 743 tons of gold from the vaults in Paris and New York, valued at over 30 billion dollars. This measure was necessary to increase confidence in the production of the metal and to put an end to concerns about the German gold reserve falling into Russian hands.

01 – United States

Leading the ranking, firmly established for years as the largest gold reserve in the world, the United States possesses more than 8 thousand tons of gold in its vaults. Even though there have been some declines in investments and related areas over the last 50 years, the largest gold reserve in the U.S. still holds about 74.9% of the international precious metal.

Indeed, the United States is one of the few countries with a more stabilized gold reserve in the world, something that guarantees the Americans this well-deserved 1st place.
