The Abreu e Lima Refinery (RNEST), located in Ipojuca (PE), is today a fundamental landmark in Brazil’s energy transition. Since its inauguration on November 24, 2014, the refinery not only operates efficiently but also leads sustainability initiatives, making it an essential unit in the Petrobras system. Thus, it establishes itself as the company’s most modern and sustainable unit, standing out in the production of clean energy and sustainable fuels.
Sustainability at the Core of RNEST’s Strategy
From the beginning, RNEST has prioritized practices that integrate high operational efficiency with environmental respect. In this way, it has reduced energy consumption, optimized water use, and ensured maximum safety in its operations. Still in December 2023, the refinery took an important step by inaugurating the Emission Reduction Unit (SNOx), reaffirming its environmental commitment and leadership position. Through this technology, it transformed polluting gases such as SOx and NOx into marketable products, in addition to generating internal energy.
Investments That Are Transforming Energy in Brazil
Petrobras has consistently invested in initiatives that enhance refining capacity and promote clean fuels. The Business Plan 2025-2029 allocates US$ 19.6 billion for projects such as the revamp of Train 1, slated for March 2025, and the completion of Train 2 by 2029. This way, RNEST will increase its production capacity and generate thousands of jobs, contributing to both economic growth and the energy transition.

With an investment of R$ 520 million, the SNOx technology, inaugurated in November 2023, is one of the most advanced in the sector.
