The Government of Rio Grande do Sul Signed Partnership with Enerfín of Brazil to Develop a Green Hydrogen Project in the Largest Industrial District of the State

The Government of Rio Grande do Sul signed a partnership with the company Enerfín of Brazil, part of the Spanish group Elecnor/Enerfín, last Thursday (24). A memorandum of understanding was signed by both parties for the construction of a green hydrogen production project in the state. This is the second agreement signed by the government of Rio Grande do Sul in an effort to delve into green hydrogen technologies. Last December, a partnership was established with the company White Martins.

Learn More About the Intentions of the Memorandum with Enerfín of Brazil

The text of the memorandum defines the construction of a potential green hydrogen project in Rio Grande do Sul as a goal. Opportunities will also be identified for creating a project at the port of Rio Grande, and the intention to find opportunities for developing a green hydrogen production project was established.

The memorandum from the government of Rio Grande do Sul with Enerfín also aims to find other opportunities focused on the electric sector or electrification of industries linked to the project, in addition to making collaborations feasible and synergies among the parties to identify possible regulatory and tax barriers.

According to Eduardo Leite, Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, it is a great opportunity for the state, and all forces of the government are being mobilized to lead and build conditions for an enhanced vocation. Leite states that he is seeking companies to present reasons why RS is seen as a good host for the implementation of the green hydrogen project, and also to build relationships that will allow for proving the investment’s viability.

RS Uses 80% Renewable Energy

According to the government of Rio Grande do Sul, the state has been conducting studies to transition to decarbonization through the use of green hydrogen, developing a branch in the economic matrix of high technology and added value.

Currently, the state already operates with 80% renewable energy in its matrix, where wind energy accounts for 20%. Leite explains that signing the memorandum with Enerfín of Brazil is another step towards the future.

The available port, industries, wind potential, and the various uses that green hydrogen and ammonia can have in other activities give the state a unique opportunity compared to other states. It is noteworthy that the use of hydrogen is in line with the commitment made by Rio Grande do Sul to cut carbon emissions in half by the beginning of the next decade.

Enerfín of Brazil Comments on the Signed Memorandum

Enerfín is a subsidiary of the Elecnor group, a Spanish company experienced in the development, installation, and operation of wind power plants. In RS, the group built the Osório Wind Complex, the first large-scale wind farm in Latin America. Marco Antônio Morales, director of new business at Enerfín in Latin America, highlighted the confidence in the partnership and the state’s potential for project development.

Morales states that the company believes this energy solution, which the world so desperately needs, will happen and is excited to do it for the first time in Rio Grande do Sul. The company aims to implement this project in RS due to all the possibilities for export and domestic consumption, reaffirming its confidence in the state.

The location with the highest potential to host the project is the port of Rio Grande, the largest industrial district in Rio Grande do Sul, which has 2,580 hectares, a strategic and privileged position, and available back areas.
