The Progress of the Bioceanic Route, Brazil’s Megaproject, Promises to Change the South American Landscape.

You won’t believe the fast pace of construction on the Bioceanic Route! This Brazilian megaproject that will revolutionize South America is in full swing, and the latest updates show that we are getting closer to strategically connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Although Brazil is one of the largest economic powers in the Americas, it faces a disadvantage compared to countries like the United States and Canada, which have access to two oceans. The Bioceanic Route is Brazil’s answer to this issue, creating a logistical corridor of 2,396 km in length that will link the Port of Santos in São Paulo to the Port of Antofagasta in Chile, passing through Paraguay and Argentina.

This ambitious megaproject aims to reduce the time of Brazilian exports to Asia by up to 40%, cutting the journey from 49 to 34 days. This is crucial, as China has become the largest buyer of Brazilian products, with nearly US$ 106 billion in sales in 2023, a 16.5% increase compared to 2022.

But how is the progress of the Bioceanic Route works nowadays?

In Brazil, the construction of the highways that make up the Bioceanic Route‘s logistical corridor is progressing rapidly. The main stretch is BR-267, which runs from Bataguaçu, on the border of Mato Grosso do Sul with São Paulo, to Porto Murtinho, on the border with Paraguay. Improvements are being implemented to ensure the efficiency and safety of cargo transport, including the revitalization of 101 km of highway with additional lanes and wider shoulders.

The construction of the bioceanic bridge connecting Porto Murtinho to Carmelo Peralta in Paraguay is 60% complete. With a length of 1,294 meters, the bridge is divided into three sections and represents a crucial link in the integration between the two countries.

In Paraguay, works on the PY01 highway are advancing significantly, and in Argentina, improvements are being made on routes connecting the Paraguayan border to the Argentine interior. In Chile, the focus is on highways that connect the interior to the Pacific ports.

The Challenges of the Megaproject Are Not Only Physical

The integration of efficient customs systems is essential for the success of the Bioceanic Route. Governments are discussing the creation of a joint customs center to expedite processes and increase the competitiveness of the route.

Studies indicate that the Bioceanic Route could reduce the distance of Brazilian exports to Asia by up to 9,700 km, which translates to a reduction of up to 12 days in travel time to countries like China.

However, with the expected increase in the flow of goods, the final ports may face bottlenecks. Therefore, the Port of Santos is undergoing major expansion projects, with investments of R$ 13 billion in 2024 to increase its operational capacity.

The Brazilian Government is Investing in the Modernization of Key Routes

The integration with railways and highways is crucial. The Brazilian government is investing in the modernization of the key routes that connect the interior to the Port of Santos, including the integration of the North-South Railway.

This Brazilian megaproject not only promises to revolutionize South American trade but also position the country on more equal footing with powers that have access to two oceans.

And you, do you believe that the Bioceanic Route will be the boost Brazil needs to become even more competitive on the global stage? Leave your opinion in the comments!
