Part Of The Energy Demand Of Rnest Expansion Will Be Supplied By Solar Energy, Says Petrobras During Official Announcement.
The Petrobras confirmed that it will install a new photovoltaic solar plant to supply part of the energy demand of the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest) expansion in Pernambuco.
Solar Energy Gains Priority At Petrobras Refineries
Moreover, according to the state-owned company, the solar plant will have a capacity of 12 megawatts (MW), enough to meet about 10% of the increased energy consumption generated by the refinery’s expansion.
Although the Strategic Plan 2026-2030 has reduced investments in wind and solar compared to the previous cycle, the company still expects to invest 1.7 GW in renewable generation by 2030.

Thus, Petrobras reinforces that, even with adjustments in the strategy, the refineries remain the focus of energy self-consumption initiatives.
At the press conference held on 11/28, Chambriard emphasized this priority by stating:
“The installation of solar generation will primarily be at the refineries for self-consumption, aiming to free up gas for the market.”
Other Refineries Also Advance With Renewable Energy
Petrobras is about to complete another similar solar plant at the Gabriel Passos Refinery (Regap) in Betim (MG).
The company also projects that, starting in 2027, the Duque de Caxias (Reduc) and Capuava (Recap) refineries will operate almost entirely with solar energy.
Additionally, it reinforces the central message of the company’s energy plan:
Rnest Expansion Will Double Production Capacity
Moreover, the expansion of the Abreu e Lima Refinery is one of the largest industrial projects underway in the country.
This portion will meet 17% of the entire national diesel demand.
The remaining 30% will be distributed across gasoline, LPG (cooking gas), and naphtha.
Investments, Contracts, And Modernization Of The Refinery
The project for expansion of Rnest involves R$ 8.3 billion in investments, distributed across nine contracts with companies such as Consag, Tenenge, CPL, Possebon, Tecnosonda, and Schneider Electric.
Thus, these works consolidate the refinery as the most modern at Petrobras, characterized by high levels of automation and advanced operational control systems.
Solar Energy As A Pillar Of The Expansion
The decision to integrate solar energy into operations reinforces Petrobras’ shift in posture, aiming to optimize resources, reduce emissions, and ensure energy self-sufficiency in its industrial complexes.
