In 2012, Los Angeles streets were blocked and 400 trees were cut down for the space shuttle Endeavour to travel 19 km to the California Science Center, in a historical operation that stopped entire neighborhoods.

In October 2012, Los Angeles experienced one of the most impressive and complex logistical operations in its history: the transportation of the space shuttle Endeavour through the city streets. What seemed like a simple change of address turned into an urban spectacle that stopped entire neighborhoods, requiring the blocking of roads, the removal of traffic lights, and, controversially, the cutting of 400 trees along the route.

The Endeavour, which had completed its missions after 25 flights and 123 million miles traveled, needed to be taken from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the California Science Center, where it would be exhibited permanently. The problem: a vehicle 37 meters long, 24 meters wide, and 75 tons needed to cross 19 kilometers of urban streets.

A City Stopped for the Transport of the Space Shuttle

The operation, which lasted three days, involved hundreds of engineers, police, traffic teams, and volunteers.

For the Endeavour to pass, streets were blocked and dozens of neighborhoods faced a true “logistical blackout”: traffic lights were temporarily removed, power lines suspended, poles relocated, and traffic signs taken down.

More than 400 trees were cut down along the way — a decision that sparked protests from residents and environmentalists, but was deemed necessary to avoid damage to the space shuttle and allow safe passage through narrow streets. In return, the city promised to plant over a thousand new trees as replacements.

The 19 Km Route: Millimeter Challenge Through the Streets of Los Angeles

Moving the Endeavour required more than just brute force. The vehicle was placed on a motorized wheeled transport system — an autonomous platform that allowed for precise movements, with turns of up to 90 degrees.

The movement was extremely slow: at times, the space shuttle advanced only 3 meters per hour, especially when crossing tight intersections or avoiding historic structures. The operation turned into an event, with thousands of residents coming out to witness every step.

Impact on Neighborhoods and Population Reactions

The residents of Los Angeles experienced a mix of fascination and frustration. On one hand, seeing the Endeavour passing through residential streets was described as a “historic and thrilling” moment.

On the other hand, there were criticisms of the tree cutting and the disruptions caused: closed streets, diverted traffic, and even power outages in some areas during the removal of cables and poles.

Despite the protests, the passage of the Endeavour turned into a sort of collective celebration. Children, families, and tourists gathered along the route to take photos and document the unusual scene: a space shuttle slowly gliding between houses, shops, and historic buildings.

The Arrival at the California Science Center

After 68 hours, the Endeavour finally reached its destination at the California Science Center, where it became one of the most visited attractions in the museum. The operation was deemed a success by NASA and local authorities, who highlighted the complexity of the urban mission.

For many, that transport was the “final flight” of the Endeavour — no longer in space, but through the streets of one of the most iconic cities in the world.

The cutting of the 400 trees remains a sensitive point, but the promise of large-scale replanting eased some of the criticism. Today, the route of the Endeavour is remembered as an engineering and logistics feat and a demonstration of the collective effort to preserve a crucial piece of space history.

The operation also showed how much the space shuttle still captivates: even retired, the Endeavour managed to stop a metropolis to complete its last mission, crossing 19 km in a unique spectacle of planning, strength, and emotion.
