Developer Will Build Wind Farm Operator in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein, Including Re-Powering of Wind Farm Aldenhoven.
RWE has secured two more contracts in the latest German onshore wind auction. The company was chosen to build and operate a new wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia and another in Schleswig-Holstein, following successful bids to the Federal Network Agency. With completion expected in 2025, the ten wind turbines will be able to provide enough green electricity to meet the needs of around 42,000 families. According to Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, this is an important step for the energy transition in Germany. ‘I am very pleased that, with the new wind farms, we are laying the next foundations for the energy transition in our domestic wind farm market, Germany.’
By constructing the Aldenhoven wind farm on recultivated areas of the Inden open-pit mine in the Düren district, RWE contributes to green electricity production. The six wind turbines will be able to generate enough electricity to supply approximately 24,000 households annually after commissioning in 2025. Additionally, the RWE team will begin building the access road and setting up the construction site in the first quarter of 2024. By building the Lasbek wind farm, located in the Hamburg metropolitan area in the Stormarn district of Schleswig-Holstein, RWE will also re-power six existing wind turbines with a total capacity of 10.8 MW, replacing them with four more powerful turbines. The new construction is scheduled to start in the winter of 2024/2025, while the old turbines will remain in the grid for as long as possible, benefiting from the experience gained in other repowering projects.

The German Federal Network Agency approved the repowering project for the Aldenhoven wind farm, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The park, which currently has 12 wind turbines, will undergo an upgrade that will replace the existing turbines with new, more efficient and powerful ones, capable of generating more clean and renewable energy.
The repowering of the Aldenhoven wind farm is an important measure to ensure the continuity of wind energy generation in the region, contributing to the supply of electricity to an even greater number of households. With the completion of the project, the installed capacity of the wind farm will be significantly increased, boosting its contribution to the local energy system.
Moreover, the modernization of the wind farm will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, strengthening Germany’s commitment to transitioning to a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix. The repowering of the Aldenhoven wind farm represents a significant investment in the renewable energy sector, demonstrating the importance of wind generation for the country’s energy future.
With the approval of the Federal Network Agency, the start of repowering works at the Aldenhoven wind farm is expected next year, with the expectation that the modernization will be completed within a 24-month timeframe. By the end of this period, the park will be capable of meeting the growing demands for clean energy, consolidating its position as a reliable source of renewable electricity for the region.
The repowering of the Aldenhoven wind farm represents an important milestone for the wind energy sector in Germany, demonstrating the country’s ongoing commitment to expanding and modernizing its renewable energy sources. With the completion of the project, the wind farm will be prepared to meet the future energy challenges, contributing to the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy.
