Dutch Company Will Be Responsible for the Operation and Maintenance of the FPSO GranMorgu in a Multibillion-Dollar Project Led by TotalEnergies on the Coast of the South American Country.
SBM Offshore, a Dutch energy company, has signed an important contract with TotalEnergies. The agreement involves the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the first floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) to be installed off the coast of Suriname. This milestone represents a significant advance for the region’s energy development.
Agreement with TotalEnergies Strengthens SBM Offshore’s Presence in South America
The signing of the contract for the FPSO GranMorgu consolidates SBM Offshore’s position in the South American market. The announcement comes just a few weeks after the start of construction of the unit in China. The project is located in Block 58, a promising area on the coast of Suriname.
Details of the Operation and Maintenance Contract (O&M)
The contract signed with TotalEnergies covers two main phases. The first includes preparation for the operational readiness of the FPSO, before the start of oil extraction. Subsequently, SBM Offshore will take over the operation and maintenance services for a minimum period of two years, with the possibility of extension.

The Heart of the Billion-Dollar Project in Block 58
SBM Offshore and Technip Energies were contracted for the work on the FPSO following the final investment decision of the GranMorgu project. The offshore venture is valued at US$ 12.2 billion and is located about 150 kilometers off the coast. The floating production unit will have the capacity to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day.
SBM Offshore in Strategic Partnership for Energy Development in Suriname
The project is operated by TotalEnergies. The initiative also involves the participation of APA Corporation and the Surinamese state oil company, Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname (Staatsolie). The main goal is to develop the vast resources of Block 58, focusing on the areas of Sapakara and Krabdagu.
Focus on Sustainability and Low Emissions in Offshore Production
The FPSO GranMorgu has been designed with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The unit will feature a fully electric drive system. Additionally, the project aims to eliminate routine gas flaring and its reinjection. As a result, it is expected that the intensity of Scope 1 and 2 emissions will be less than 16 kg of CO₂e per barrel of oil equivalent.
