The SP4 will be a 23 MW facility with an inauguration scheduled for December 2021, with SP5 weighing in at 40 MW and SP6 being a 12 MW site. The provider, founded in April 2020 by the U.S. investment fund Digital Colony, signed a 10-year contract with the utility company AES Tietê and another with Engie Brasil Energia, both guaranteed by renewable energy certificates for the data centers in São Paulo.
Power Purchase Agreement
“In addition to a contract we already had with Engie that guaranteed us energy from renewable sources, we made an important negotiation for an eight-year PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) with AES Tietê, whose generation is hydroelectric and, therefore, 100% renewable sources,” said Scala’s CEO, Marcos Paigo, in an interview with DCD Brasil editor, Tatiane Aquim.

“We acquired both certificates issued by the International REC Standard (I-REC), which is a global system that allows for the tracking and certification of renewable energies.”
Inauguration Will Take Place in December
The newly announced SP4 data center will have a capacity of 23 MW in two buildings, one of which will be for a single hyperscale client while the other will serve the “ecosystem” of colocation. The inauguration is scheduled for December and will have LEED certification.
Construction of SP5 and SP6 will begin in 2022. With 30 MW, SP5 will be aimed at hyperscalers and could become the largest facility in Latin America. SP6 will have a smaller scale for colocation clients, with a capacity of 12 MW.
Additionally, Scala plans two more availability zones in the state of São Paulo, each with at least one new greenfield data center, with a planned start by the end of 2022, according to an article posted on its website.
