Pipelines and UPGNs of Petrobras Would Have to Be Accessed by Potiguar E&P, Doubling the Natural Gas Supply in the State
The federal government’s project to offer natural gas at a 50% discount faces several hurdles, one of which is affecting the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The state has the potential to deliver approximately 300,000 m³/day of natural gas but needs to resolve some issues related to infrastructure. Petrobras reviews the project and may cancel the FPSO of Itapu.

The statement is from the president of Potiguar E&P, Marcelo Magalhães, made during an interview with the epbr portal. The executive stated that this potential is greater than the total natural gas consumption of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which is currently at 200,000 m³/day, but has reached a peak of 318,000 m³/day in 2018.

Petrobras advances 4.6% with rising oil prices and the dollar, reigniting the debate on macro risks, pricing policy, and fiscal impact in Brazil.
A favorable factor, according to Magalhães, is that the fields are connected to Petrobras’s pipeline network. However, on the other hand, there is a lack of access to infrastructure to negotiate natural gas with Potigás, the company that distributes in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
Since the companies already have a memorandum of understanding aiming for a future gas commercialization contract, access to this infrastructure is necessary.
“I need access to the production pipeline (from Petrobras), which takes it from my facility to the UPGN, and then, for them to provide the service (processing) with the UPGN,” explained the president of Potiguar E&P.
It is worth remembering that to open the gas market, Petrobras signed an agreement with the CADE, but it will need to resolve some issues related to the taxation of this type of operation, which is being done for the first time in Brazil.
Potiguar E&P also operates in Bahia, through PetroReconcavo, and purchased the Riacho da Forquilha Polo at the end of last year, in the Potiguar Basin. The state of Rio Grande do Norte has enormous onshore potential as it already has a qualified workforce and has about 200 blocks in the permanent offering of ANP auctions.
