Sebrae’s Microcredit Grant Project Will Reach 25 to 40 Million People and Aims to Combine Training and Formalization in the Entrepreneurship Sector
The Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) will launch a microcredit program in 2022, reaching at least 25 million people but with the capacity to serve up to 40 million entrepreneurs. The program will be supported by Caixa Econômica Federal, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Banco do Brasil, and other regional funding entities. In total, more than 40 financial organizations will be directly and indirectly involved in this entrepreneurship assistance project.
The information was provided by Carlos Melles, president of Sebrae, to the newspaper O Povo during a press conference for the 2021 edition of the global entrepreneurship survey in Brazil. The president revealed that the project is expected to grant a minimum credit of R$ 500 with, according to him, “the lowest possible and allowed interest rates.”
Emphasizing that this monitoring aims to reduce the risks of default, Carlos says: “It will be assisted credit; it is not oriented. We will take each entrepreneur by the hand and monitor the evolution of each business.” The strategy is linked to the project to admit 4,000 development and entrepreneurship education agents to be allocated at Sebrae units in Brazil to assist with the offered microcredit. In addition to credit and professional training, Sebrae’s program aims to boost the formalization of businesses in Brazil. It is also worth remembering that Sebrae offers free online courses that assist people who want to start entering the entrepreneurship field.

The Program in Numbers
The amounts offered in the microcredit program vary, depending on the individual evaluation of each business. Starting at R$ 500, the credit still allows financing businesses even for entrepreneurs with negative status. The resources will be released through the infrastructure of the Guarantee Fund for Micro and Small Enterprises (Fampe), from Sebrae itself – an institution that is offering places in free courses in the automotive sector.
“We already have a microcredit fund in operation for 35 years, but in the last 24 months, we have reached all historical records in movement and support for entrepreneurs. The focus is to ensure a new expansion; we are not talking about 2 million businesses; our minimum goal is 25 million, but we will work to reach 40 million entrepreneurs,” emphasizes Carlos.
The fund’s management will be structured in partnership with the National Program for Support to Microenterprises and Small Businesses (Pronampe) and will have a special appeal for benefits for the development of entrepreneurship in peripheral areas. According to Carlos Melles, the official announcement and disclosure of this Sebrae program will take place later this year, receiving support from the Federal Government.
Microcredit Application
The microcredit application method will be carried out by Sebrae, which will use, in addition to spontaneous demand, monitoring done with Caixa to map entrepreneurship – an area that broke records in 2021 – in Brazil.
