Imagine A Market Dominated By Automotive Giants, Where Few Believed In The Rise Of A Newcomer.
That’s exactly what happened in July 2024, when the BYD King, a plug-in hybrid sedan imported from China, surpassed the Toyota Corolla in sales, shocking experts and consumers.

In July, the BYD King recorded an impressive 593 registrations, catapulting it to the third position among the best-selling midsize sedans in Brazil, trailing only the Corolla and the Nissan Sentra.

The Dominance In Hybrid Versions
The bigger surprise, however, was in the hybrid versions: the BYD King outperformed the Toyota Corolla, which sold 348 units of the Altis Hybrid and Altis Premium Hybrid versions, revealing a growing preference among Brazilians for the Chinese sedan.
Details Of The BYD King
Imported from China, the BYD King is offered in two versions: GL and GS, with prices ranging from R$ 175,800 to R$ 187,800.
In the accumulated total for 2024, the model has already reached 671 registrations, an expressive number that demonstrates the success of the car in the Brazilian market, especially considering that its launch occurred only in June.
Performance And Efficiency Of The BYD King Engine
Under the hood, the BYD King features a powerful setup that sets it apart from competitors. The model is equipped with a 1.5 gasoline engine with 110 hp, combined with an electric motor that can reach up to 235 hp in the GS version.
The combined power in the GL version is 209 hp, while torque ranges from 316 Nm in the GL to 325 Nm in the GS. With an average consumption of up to 25.6 km/l and a range that can reach 1,200 km, the King offers performance that attracts those seeking economy and efficiency on long trips. The electric range is also impressive, reaching 80 km in the GS version, according to tests conducted by Inmetro.
The Success Of BYD Is Not Limited To The King
But the success of BYD is not limited to the King. The Song Plus SUV, also from BYD, recorded 2,139 units sold in July, accumulating 12,176 registrations in the first seven months of the year.
This solid performance puts BYD in the spotlight in the national market, with 38,540 vehicles sold so far in 2024, more than double the total sales from last year, which was 17,889 units.
Leadership In The Electric Vehicle Segment
When it comes to 100% electric vehicles, BYD also keeps pace. The Chinese brand has already sold 25,692 units of electric models in 2024, with 3,350 in just July, consolidating its position as one of the leaders in the sustainable vehicle segment in Brazil.
A Change In Brazilian Consumer Preferences
This scenario shows a significant change in Brazilian consumer preferences, who seem increasingly inclined to consider alternatives to traditional brands.
The performance of the BYD King is a clear signal that the market is open to new possibilities, and the numbers don’t lie: the presence of Chinese vehicles in Brazil is becoming more and more solidified.
The big question now is: how far can BYD go in the Brazilian market? Will other Chinese brands follow the same path and dominate the national automotive landscape in the coming years? Share your thoughts in the comments!
