It Is The Second Time In Less Than A Month That The Volkswagen Factory Has Stopped, And The Union Demands Industrial Policy From The Government

On last Friday (the 10th), the ABC Metalworkers’ Union announced that 3,000 Volkswagen employees will enter collective vacation due to the lack of parts and electronic components to complete car production. The factory in question is located in the city of São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo.

According to the union, workers were informed that the stoppage is expected to last ten days, from June 27 to July 7.

The vacation request was filed in advance due to an agreement established between Volkswagen and the union, regarding prior notice of such decisions. However, the suspension of the production line at the Anchieta plant, in São Bernardo (São Paulo), can only be confirmed when the date is closer, as changes may occur by then.

2,500 Metalworkers Had Already Gone On Collective Vacation From May 9 To 28

In May, Volkswagen had already granted collective vacation to 2,500 workers, also due to supply chain issues with a lack of semiconductors. The metalworkers were out of the factory from May 9 to 28.

According to the ABC Metalworkers’ Union, these are practically the same employees who will be going on vacation this time, with an additional 500 workers who were not suspended last month. The Volkswagen unit currently has approximately 8,200 workers, with 4,500 in production. Some of them will remain at the factory to carry out maintenance services.

José Roberto Nogueira Da Silva Emphasizes That Supply Problems Impact Not Only The Automotive Sector But The Entire Brazilian Industrial Sector

According to the general coordinator of representation at Volkswagen, José Roberto Nogueira Da Silva – Bigodinho -, the problem of the lack of components has been affecting not only the automotive industry but also the entire national industry. Therefore, for him, all workers are directly impacted. Nogueira also criticized the government, highlighting that the lack of industrial policy and development in the country has caused the disorganization of the national production chain.

Furthermore, José Roberto Nogueira Da Silva stated that the agreement in effect at the automaker, negotiated between the ABC Metalworkers’ Union and Volkswagen, ensures that employees have predictability regarding their jobs.

The general coordinator added that it is very important at this moment to have a long-term agreement to anticipate scenarios like this, which have persisted for a long time. For him, the agreement allows workers to organize themselves and enables the company to think about the future of the plant.

150,000 Volkswagen Vehicles Have Already Failed To Be Produced As A Consequence Of The Lack Of Components For Production

According to the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea), 16 factories have had to stop production from January to May this year due to the shortage of semiconductors and other necessary items for automotive manufacturing. So far, 150,000 vehicles have failed to be produced during this period.

The supply crisis began in mid-2021 and worsened after the war in Ukraine. However, the blockade of China, which lasted several weeks, also harmed global supply chains. Therefore, since May, various other parts have also become scarce, affecting the automotive industry and others.
