Itaguaí Naval Construction Welders Go to Europe to Work on French Nuclear Submarine Thanks to the Technology Transfer Program of PROSUB’s Companies
The Brazilian Naval Construction has yet another reason to be proud. ICN (Itaguaí Construções Navais) has just sent thirteen welders to France, eight from Itaguaí and the others from Santa Cruz, Jesuítas, Campo Grande, and Angra dos Reis.
The group is trained at the company’s welding school, and the trip is part of the technology transfer program with Naval Group Itaguaí, a partnership between Brazil and France responsible for building five submarines for PROSUB (Submarine Development Program of the Navy), 4 conventional models (diesel-electric) and 1 powered by nuclear propulsion.
The group will work on the welding of the hull of one of the Barracuda nuclear submarines, which will be part of the French fleet, for six months, divided into two periods of three months.
The selection of the professionals was due to the high standard of excellence in their work, and the welders were qualified through complex processes and underwent rigorous tests on plates from 55 to 110 millimeters, typically used in nuclear submarines.

Engineer Luiz Antonio da Silva, welding coordinator at ICN, emphasized that: “The results are impressive; many stages considered to be of high technical complexity were completed by the selected group without any errors, showing how right we were to invest in training these professionals here in Rio de Janeiro.”
Welders’ Training
The ICN Welding School was founded in 2013 and currently has 129 members, having already trained 174 workers. The training lasts about three months, including theory and practice.
The welding coordinator also added that: “They were selected based on their performance results and the quality of their welds, repair and defect rates, as well as their behavior, attitude, attendance, and commitment to the work performed.”
The work of the welders in France is truly a source of pride, demonstrating the capability of the Brazilian Naval Construction worker, in addition to serving as an incentive for the development of the population living around the shipyard located in Itaguaí.
According to coordinator Luiz Antonio da Silva,
Their trip to France is a recognition of ICN’s work, which believed in and qualified the professionals so they would be prepared for the construction of the first Brazilian nuclear submarine. The coordinator emphasizes the legacy for engineering and Naval Construction in the country.
