Think Back to 2020, When Sony Surprised Us with the Vision-S, a Concept Electric Car. After a Few Quiet Years with the SUV Variant, Sony Announced a Partnership with Honda, Called Sony and Honda Mobility, Which Will Build the (Ostensibly Electric) Car in the U.S. At CES 2023, Sony Unveiled a Prototype and Announced a New Brand for All Media: AFEELA.
Although the final name is not AFEELA, we are excited about the still-unnamed car from Sony and Honda – and not just because of the production plans (pre-orders in 2025, first deliveries in North America in Spring 2026). Considering the combined partnership power of Sony and Honda, this could be the first real car from the tech industry.
Features of the New Electric Car Between Sony and Honda
Unfortunately, many details were not available from this partnership between Sony and Honda, such as power, range, number of motors, etc. We know it is a five-passenger sedan that is almost as long as Acura’s MDX SUV, but with a roofline nearly 10 inches lower and it will have all-wheel drive.
Given Honda’s time and partnership with GM, we think it may take advantage of the automaker’s racing equipment and Ultium batteries. We wonder if it could share platforms with Honda’s upcoming electric SUV Prologue, although the AFEELA concept has a wheelbase nearly 4 inches shorter.

In terms of style, the AFEELA prototype looks very much like the previous Sony Vision, with its character lines and creases removed, as if someone connected an air hose to the Vision-S01 sedan and gave it ’91 Chevrolet Caprice handles. The pixelated headlights remind us of the glass units embedded in the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the overall design is vaguely Citroën, but we can’t exactly say what makes it French.
The standout external feature is the media bar, a video screen between the headlights that, according to Sony, will interact with pedestrians: in addition to the charging status, Sony also shows the media bar, local weather, and Sony Movie Picture ads. Notably, the screen is the only place where the name AFEELA appears aside from the steering wheel, so perhaps there is still time for that to change.
At the rear, the AFEELA concept takes on the form of a Kammback with Porsche-style full-width taillights topped by a panoramic sunroof. We can see what appear to be red brake calipers through the narrow mouths of the AFEELA wheels… sorry, wheels. Inside, the AFEELA opted for a minimalist look, but not to the extent of a Tesla Model 3.
Instead, the screens on the dashboard stretch from pillar to pillar in an arrangement reminiscent of the appearance of a Honda EV hatchback, including side-facing camera displays on the outer edges. The steering wheel is a yoke; let’s hope it is supported by something like Lexus’s variable ratio drive-by-wire system, instead of Tesla’s loose implementation.
Sony-Honda Mobility has the boundless optimism of a tech company with a partnership and product portfolio that could make these dreams a reality.
