Electric VTOL System With Capacity for Passengers and Cargo Completes Full Test and Reinforces Advances of eVTOL Aircraft in the Global Air Mobility Market

Electric air mobility took another significant step on February 5, 2026. At the time, a large eVTOL aircraft named V5000 completed a full flight test in China.

Moreover, the model was developed by manufacturer Fengfei Aviation and demonstrated at the Kunshan Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Test Base, located in the Chinese province of Jiangsu.

Therefore, the experiment confirmed the functioning of the main operational stages of the aircraft. Thus, the test reinforced the global advancement of electric air taxi technology.

Flight Test Confirmed Vertical Operation and Airplane Mode

Initially, the V5000 began flight using VTOL mode, technology that allows vertical takeoff similar to helicopters.

Next, the aircraft transitioned to fixed-wing mode, temporarily operating as a conventional airplane.

Subsequently, the vehicle executed a brief aerial displacement. Shortly after, it returned to vertical mode and performed a safe landing, completing all planned stages of the test.

Consequently, the demonstration proved the model’s capability to operate without traditional airport runways.

Thus, the aircraft can utilize helipads or reduced urban areas, a feature considered strategic for urban air mobility.

Configurations Allow Transportation of Passengers or Cargo

In addition to the technical test, the manufacturer reported that the V5000 can operate in different usage configurations.

On one hand, there is a version aimed at transporting people.

In this case, the model is named “Sky Dragon”.

This configuration has capacity to carry up to ten passengers.

On the other hand, the company also developed a logistics variant.

This version, called V5000 Matrix, was designed to transport approximately one ton of cargo.

Therefore, the project aims to cater to both passenger air mobility and regional goods transport.

Technical Structure Uses 20 Motors to Enhance Safety

Aside from operational versatility, the V5000 features relevant technical characteristics.

The aircraft has approximately 20 meters of wingspan.

Moreover, it uses a three-surface aerodynamic structure, a solution adopted to improve stability and efficiency.

Another important point is the propulsion system.

The model is equipped with 20 electric motors responsible for lift and flight control.

Consequently, the multiplicity of motors enhances the safety level.

This happens because the aircraft can continue operating even in the event of a failure of one of the propellers.

Range Varies Between Electric and Hybrid Versions

According to information released by Fengfei Aviation, there are different energy configurations for the V5000.

Firstly, the fully electric version has an approximate range of 250 kilometers.

However, the manufacturer is also working on a hybrid version, which combines different energy sources.

In this case, the range can reach up to 1,500 kilometers, significantly expanding the operational radius.

Thus, the proposal includes longer regional flights, in addition to traditional urban routes.

Global eVTOL Market Grows With New Projects

In recent years, the development of eVTOL aircraft has become one of the most promising areas of air mobility.

Various companies invest in this technology focusing on urban air taxi services.

For example, models developed by Joby Aviation and EHang are already in testing phases or have received operational approvals in some regions.

However, most of these vehicles typically transport between four and six passengers.

Moreover, many possess more limited operational range.

In this context, the V5000 stands out for its greater passenger capacity and the possibility of longer regional routes.

Commercial Certification Still Has No Timeline

So far, Fengfei Aviation has not announced an official timeline for the commercial certification of the V5000.

However, the company has already obtained important approvals in China for a smaller model developed earlier.

Therefore, the company indicates its intention to quickly advance in the electric air mobility market.

Additionally, the project has significant financial backing, including investments from CATL, one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers.

Thus, the technological advancement of eVTOL aircraft continues to accelerate globally.
