Paulínia (SP) Received This Week a Biomethane Power Plant That Promises to Generate Electricity for the National Energy System Without Any Pause Until 2025.

The Paulínia Verde Power Plant – SP Started Commercial Operations Last Week, Following a Mobilization of Efforts by Partners Orizon, Grupo Gera, and Mercurio Partners to Get a Greenfield Project Off the Ground in Less Than a Year. Although It Only Holds Contracts for the Next Three Years, the Expectation Is That the Biomethane Plant Will Extend Its Activities in the Long Term Through New Auctions or Other Market Alternatives.

Orizon’s Biomethane Plant Has a Capacity of Up to 110,000 m³

Located in Paulínia (SP), the Biomethane Power Plant Has Already Received R$ 180 Million in Investments and Will Provide 15.7 Megawatts of Physical Guarantee for the Brazilian Electric Power System Continuously Until 2025. The Plant Will Produce Energy Based on Biomethane Gas, Which Will Be Processed at Orizon’s Landfill in the Municipality of SP.

The Biomethane Production Plant Is Entirely Owned by Orizon and Has the Capacity to Produce Up to 110,000 Cubic Meters Per Day of Gas for the Power Plant. According to the Founder and CEO of Mercurio Partners, Alexandre Americano, The Companies Rushed Against Time to Make the Project Feasible. This Is the Second of 17 Emergency Projects Contracted by the Government to Begin Operations; Besides This One, Only a Biomass Power Plant Using Wood Chips Is Currently Operating.

As the Contract Provides That the Biomethane Power Plant in SP Cannot Stop Generating Electricity for the System, The Companies Invested in Additional Equipment to Ensure There Are No Issues.

Partnership with Comgás

In Addition, The Power Plant in SP Will Work with Other Options Besides Biomethane as Fuel. It Can Also Operate with Natural Gas or Liquefied Natural Gas.

According to Americano, a Contract Was Closed with Comgás, Which Built a Gas Pipeline to Meet the Power Plant’s Demands, to Provide Greater Flexibility and Redundancy. André Castro, a Partner at Grupo Gera and Operations Director of the Biomethane Power Plant, States That the Complexity and Speed of the Project Imposed a Series of Challenges to the Installation.

According to Castro, All Global Import Queues Were Bypassed to Bring the Power Plant’s Engine During Covid, Tax Office Strikes, War, Among Other Issues. Additionally, There Was a Substation to Be Built Within the Site and a Transmission Line to Be Constructed on Third-Party Land.

The Power Plant May Seek New Electric Power Supply Contracts

In the Future, Executives Believe That the Biomethane Power Plant May Seek New Electric Power Supply Contracts, Whether in Government Auctions or Directly with Customers, in Modalities Such as Distributed Generation.

According to the Engineering and Implementation Director of Orizon, The Alternatives for an Asset Like This in SP, in Good Condition and Relatively New, Are Many. It Is Possible to Continue With Other Types of Fuel, Such as Biogas, After Some Adjustments. Elias Also Highlights That Orizon Prepared Its Biomethane Production Infrastructure in Paulínia to Meet Future Interests, Such as an Expansion of the Power Plant, for Example.

Orizon’s Landfill in SP Has Enough Material for the Production of 250,000 Cubic Meters of Biomethane Per Day; However, This Would Depend on New Investments. Paulínia Verde Was One of the Winners of the Bidding Organized in a Hurry by the Government at the Height of the Water Crisis in 2021.
