Year-End Departures Increase at Teresina Bus Terminal, Boosting Bus Travel in the Northeast in 2025.
The Bus Terminal in Teresina is experiencing one of the most intense periods of the year with the increase in year-end departures, driven by bus travel in the Northeast during the last week of 2025.
According to data from the National Society of Road and Tourist Support (Sinart), the expectation is for 12,500 departures between December 27 and 30, reflecting the increased demand for road travel to the coast and capitals of the region.
The growth is occurring in Teresina, Piauí, as a result of year-end festivities, the tradition of family visits, and the search for relaxation, while authorities reinforce safety guidelines on the roads to mitigate risks during this period.

Road Movement 2025 Gains Momentum at Teresina Bus Terminal
The road movement of 2025 shows distinct characteristics in this year-end closing.
Although daily traffic has significantly increased in the last week of December, the monthly accumulation indicates a retraction.
According to the Sinart, December is expected to close with around 82,000 departures, a number 5% lower than recorded in 2024.
Despite this, the scenario indicates intense passenger circulation at the Teresina Bus Terminal, especially in the days leading up to New Year’s.
The highest concentration occurs during nighttime and early morning hours when travelers seek to avoid the heat and ensure quicker connections.
Bus Travel in the Northeast Has Preferred Destinations
Among the bus travels in the Northeast, the most sought-after destinations this year-end confirm an already known pattern.
Capitals such as Fortaleza (CE), Recife (PE), São Luís (MA), and Salvador (BA) lead the demand, along with the coast of Piauí, which remains a strong tourist attraction.
“The coast traditionally records a significant increase in demand during this period,” stated Sinart.
The preference can be explained by the combination of collective holidays, favorable weather, and more affordable costs of road transport compared to other modalities.
Irregular Transport Affects Year-End Departures
Despite the occasional growth in year-end departures, the reduction in the total volume for the month is associated with a significant external factor.
According to Sinart, the rise of irregular transport, carried out by vans, small vehicles, and shared transport services, has diverted part of the demand from the formal road system.
This movement directly affects the Teresina Bus Terminal, both in revenue and operational planning, in addition to raising concerns regarding passenger safety and oversight.
Stories of Those Traveling to Reunite with Family
Behind the numbers of the road movement in 2025 are personal stories that repeat each December.
The environmental educator Jairo Galvão maintains the tradition of traveling to Tutoia, Maranhão, during the festive period.
“Family and friends, we are going to the other side of the Delta to visit relatives, spend this year-end, and return when possible,” he stated.
Such accounts help explain why road transport remains a central choice for those who prioritize proximity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.
Fleet Almost Fully Booked for the Coast
The increase in bus travel in the Northeast is also reflected in the operations of companies in the sector.
According to Tales Rafael, owner of a travel agency, 90% of the company’s bus fleet is already booked, especially for destinations in the Piauí and Ceará coasts.
This level of occupancy demands logistical planning, reinforcement of teams, and heightened attention to vehicle conditions, especially during a period marked by busier roads.
Air Transport Grows, but Buses Remain Essential
While the Teresina Bus Terminal records significant traffic, air transport is also on the rise.
The Senator Petrônio Portella Airport in the capital of Piauí is expected to reach 60,550 passengers during the festivities, a growth of 20.84% compared to 2024, when 50,107 departures were registered.
Even with this expansion, road transport remains fundamental for regional integration, especially for inland cities and tourist destinations with fewer flight options.
Road Safety is a Priority at Year-End
In light of the increased road movement in 2025, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) reinforces essential safety guidelines on the roads.
Among the recommendations are preventive vehicle inspection, monitoring weather conditions, and adequate rest before traveling.
Additionally, the PRF highlights the importance of adhering to speed limits, using seat belts,
Avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving, not consuming alcoholic beverages before driving, and making overtakes only in permitted areas.
These measures, although simple, are crucial in reducing accidents during year-end departures.
Teresa Bus Terminal Continues as a Regional Mobility Hub
By the end of 2025, the Teresina Bus Terminal reaffirms its strategic role in the mobility of the Northeast.
Even in the face of challenges such as irregular transport, the terminal continues to concentrate a large portion of bus travel in the Northeast,
connecting people, stories, and destinations during one of the most symbolic periods of the Brazilian calendar.
