The 2024 Toyota Corolla arrives with a series of innovations, but one point still raises questions among drivers: the durability of the direct injection system with ethanol. Brazilian fuel can bring great benefits, but is the Corolla prepared to face them? We heard from an expert in mechanics from High Torque to understand more about these challenges.

The 2024 Toyota Corolla is known for its reliability and technology, but the use of direct injection with ethanol in flex engines generates heated discussions among enthusiasts and mechanics. Recently, we tested the model with pure ethanol for a week, and the experience provided important insights into the performance and potential issues of this combination of technology and fuel.

The Great Differential of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

With its sporty flair and renewed visual, the 2024 Toyota Corolla delivers remarkable performance, especially regarding driving dynamics. The 2.0 aspirated engine maintains robustness, while the direct injection system with ethanol promises greater efficiency in consumption. During the test, the average consumption ranged between 10 and 12 km/l in mixed cycle – an impressive figure for a motor running exclusively on ethanol.

Direct Injection with Ethanol: Problem or Solution?

The direct injection technology with ethanol was implemented to improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, but it is not without complications. Experts point out that this system, while efficient, faces challenges in Brazil, especially due to inconsistent ethanol quality in the country.

According to the mechanic consulted for the report, “at some point, it causes problems”, and this failure is not necessarily associated with the automaker but with the injector manufacturers themselves. Toyota has made several updates to its components to mitigate issues caused by adulteration and low-quality ethanol, but the combination of direct injection with ethanol still presents long-term risks.

Maintenance and Care: How to Avoid Headaches

Problems with direct injection with ethanol are not uncommon, and proper maintenance becomes essential to avoid failures in the injectors and the high-pressure pump. The high concentration of impurities can cause clogging of the injectors, forming a layer of dirt similar to molasses, which requires frequent cleaning. “Just look at this dirt in the distribution tube, it’s impressive what ethanol does,” the expert warned while opening the hood and inspecting the engine of a model that had already faced these problems.

An interesting detail about the 2024 Toyota Corolla is that it has both direct and indirect injection, which helps the engine cope with different loads and usage conditions. The car’s module automatically manages which injection system to activate, depending on the engine phase – which helps to mitigate some impacts of continuous ethanol use.

A Promising Future or New Challenges for the Corolla?

The experience with the 2024 Toyota Corolla shows that the car remains an excellent choice for those seeking comfort, technology, and economy, but the challenges of direct injection with ethanol cannot be ignored.

Is it worth investing in a car with this technology in Brazil? Share your opinions in the comments!
