With New Vessels of 150 Thousand Tons Each, Company Increases Efficiency, Reduces Emissions and Strengthens Logistics of the Petrobras System
Transpetro announced a strategic investment that will double its offshore platform alleviation capacity by 2028. The company has contracted nine dynamic positioning relief vessels, of the Suezmax DP2 class, totaling 1.35 million deadweight tons (DWT). Currently, the fleet’s capacity is 700 thousand DWT.
The vessels are being built by Samsung Shipyard in South Korea and will be delivered over the next few years. Each ship is 274 meters long, 48 meters wide, and has a draft of 17 meters.
Energy Efficiency and Automatic Position Control

The new vessels from Transpetro are equipped with the DP2 system, which allows for automatic position and heading control during offloading operations, increasing safety in offshore environments. This technology is essential for reducing operational risks during the transfer of oil between FPSOs and tankers.

The loading will be done from the bow, using the BLS system, which makes the process faster and safer, especially in adverse maritime conditions.
Sustainable Vessels and Prepared for Alternative Fuels
In search of environmental efficiency, Transpetro will equip the new Suezmax vessels with low NOx emission engines, Tier III type, which reduce harmful gas emissions by 30%. The vessels are also prepared to operate with alternative fuels such as methanol and ethanol.
Another distinguishing feature is the use of shore power, a system that connects the ship to the electrical grid from the shore. This allows for operation without fossil fuels when docked at compatible terminals, further reducing the fleet’s carbon footprint.
Transpetro Maintains Pioneering Status in DP Vessels in Brazil
Since 2010, Transpetro has been a pioneer in the use of vessels with dynamic positioning for Petrobras. With this new fleet, the company consolidates its leadership in logistical solutions for oil transportation and strengthens its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation.
The new generation of Suezmax DP2 vessels will have an individual capacity of 150 thousand deadweight tons and will be responsible for a significant portion of the national offshore production drainage operations in the coming decades.
