The Natural Gas-Powered Truck Is from Transportadora Cavalinho and Will Be Used for the Transport of Phenol Produced by the Company Rhodia
As part of a pilot project for the development of a new energy matrix, Transportadora Cavalinho, in partnership with Scania, made available a natural gas-powered truck for the transport of phenol produced in Paulínia, São Paulo, by Rhodia, a company of the Solvay Group, for SI Group Crios Resinas, whose facilities are in Rio Claro, also in the state of São Paulo. Project for Replacing Diesel with Natural Gas
In the first phase of the pilot project, the companies will evaluate the performance and behavior of the truck that uses an alternative fuel source (natural gas) on this route in São Paulo. The expectation is that the use of cleaner energy will allow for a monthly reduction of 90% in CO2 emissions, and the vehicles will become quieter in operation.
Monthly, the total distance covered on the route between the Rhodia and SI Group Crios Resinas factories is approximately 6,000 kilometers. Transportadora Cavalinho’s calculations indicate that diesel trucks emit 5.64 tons of CO2, while the natural gas truck emits only 0.56 tons of CO2.

Paulo Ossani, director of Transportadora Cavalinho, emphasizes that the adoption of new fuel alternatives, such as the use of natural gas in the truck for cargo transport, is a natural movement for the sector. Paulo states that companies in the cargo sector have been seeking to enhance sustainability in their operations through initiatives for reduction, compensation, or neutralization of carbon emissions. Increasingly, we will see various alternative fuel sources being used in production chains, completes the director.
The Truck Used in the Carrier’s Project
The Scania truck used in this project has a tractor head powered by compressed natural gas with EURO 6 technology, in accordance with the eighth phase of Proconve – Vehicle Emission Control Program.
According to Reginaldo Lazari, Supply Chain Manager at Rhodia in Latin America, the pilot project for the natural gas-powered truck received the company’s approval after a rigorous safety assessment process for transportation. Reginaldo mentions that there are very strict procedures that the cargo transportation market has recognized for decades, adding that Crios, a customer of Rhodia’s phenol, also gave a favorable opinion on the project for the use of natural gas in the truck.

Scania has just announced the sale of a fleet of gas trucks to TransMaroni. TransMaroni now has 50 gas-powered trucks (natural gas and/or biogas) from Scania and makes history in national transportation with the largest fleet ever acquired of this alternative solution to diesel. With this deal, Scania reaches a milestone of 150 gas trucks sold in Brazil.
The carrier is initiating a new positioning, prioritizing sustainability, completing an investment cycle of R$ 50 million in various actions in this field and not just related to this purchase. The Scania, which leads the transition to a more sustainable transport system, has reached the milestone of 150 trucks with this technology since sales began in October 2019.
TransMaroni acquired the first 11 units from Scania in October 2020. With the performance of the product and the visibility generated by new business, the company decided to purchase other smaller batches, totaling an additional 39 units ordered. In total, the company reached a historic volume of 50 natural gas/methane trucks.
