Joint Announcement by Government and City Hall in Curitiba Confirms Over R$ 180 Million for the Trinary of Marechal Floriano, Three Overpasses, Tunnels Between Capão Raso and Xaxim, and Roadworks Promising to Alleviate Chronic Congestion on the Linha Verde by 2027, with Integration with Boqueirão, Parolin, Auer, and São José

In the announcement made today in Curitiba, Government and City Hall formalized agreements totaling over R$ 180 million to transform the Linha Verde and the axis of Marechal Floriano Peixoto. The interventions will start with the tunnels between Capão Raso and Xaxim, with works scheduled to begin in the next 30 days, and an estimated completion between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, according to the schedule presented by state and municipal authorities.

The road package includes the so-called trinary of Marechal Floriano, three new overpasses in the Linha Verde region, rehabilitation of the existing overpass, drainage works, paving, landscaping, installation of fiber optic, and geotechnical adjustments in an area of at least 100,000 square meters. The Government and City Hall’s bet is to reorganize the flow between neighborhoods in the southern region and the historic center, reducing travel time, daily stress, and the chronic traffic jams that currently mark peak hours.

Trinary of Marechal Floriano Changes the Design of the Linha Verde

Government and City Hall announce trinary on Marechal Floriano, new overpasses on Linha Verde, and roadworks in Curitiba to unblock traffic and integrate the city.

The central axis of the roadworks package is the trinary of Marechal Floriano Peixoto, regarded by authorities as one of the largest road projects ever executed in Curitiba.

The majority of the funding, over R$ 170 million, will be allocated to this intervention, although Mayor Eduardo Pimentel himself mentions an investment of over R$ 160 million specifically for the trinary, reflecting adjustments in estimates within the same financial package.

According to the presented design, Marechal Floriano will undergo a complete requalification and is expected to become a road practically exclusive for collective transport, prioritizing bi-articulated buses, alongside organized space for cyclists and pedestrians.

Currently, the avenue operates with a channel and mixed lanes in both directions, causing constant conflicts between buses, cars, and trucks.

The goal is that, with the trinary, part of the general traffic will be redistributed to other parallel roads and grade-separated intersections, while Marechal Floriano concentrates the structuring axis of collective transport.

Government and City Hall argue that this change is essential to scale up the metropolitan integration towards São José dos Pinhais and the Boqueirão region.

Three Overpasses to Unblock Critical Intersections of the Linha Verde

Another central point of the announcement is the construction of three overpasses on the Linha Verde, at intersections currently considered critical for those entering and leaving the southern region of Curitiba.

Two of them will be built at the intersections with Anne Frank and Francisco Ferreira de Souza streets, points that currently concentrate long queues during peak entering and leaving hours of work.

Additionally, a complete renovation of the existing overpass on Marechal Floriano is planned, along with the construction of a new parallel overpass linking Anne Frank to Luiz Finzetto, creating a new axis of circulation at different levels.

A third overpass, on the opposite side, will connect the local road to the express road of Boqueirão, allowing part of the flow to be diverted from the Linha Verde and redistributed at different traffic levels.

In practice, the combination of trinary, overpasses, and adjustments of access ramps aims to untie one of Curitiba’s largest urban knots, precisely in the stretch where the Linha Verde crosses densely populated neighborhoods such as Boqueirão, Auer, Parolin, and Hauer.

According to the state government, the project also improves road safety conditions by reducing at-grade intersections and conflicts between cars, buses, and pedestrians.

Tunnels Between Capão Raso and Xaxim Expected to Start in 30 Days

Alongside the trinary, Government and City Hall confirmed the start, within 30 days, of an R$ 85 million project for two one-way tunnels linking Capão Raso and Xaxim, in Vila São Pedro.

The bidding has already been completed, the winning company is contracted, and the expectation is that the teams will commence work during this first execution cycle of the package.

The two tunnels will operate in a one-way system in opposite directions, connecting the neighborhoods and allowing passing traffic to be lowered, while the surface remains more organized for local circulation, collective transport, and pedestrian crossings.

The idea is that this set of works complements the trinary of Marechal Floriano, addressing simultaneous bottlenecks in the same area of influence.

According to Mayor Eduardo Pimentel, this specific intervention is also funded with non-repayable resources from the state government, which reduces the impact on the municipality’s direct budget and allows Curitiba to maintain other ongoing mobility projects.

Cultural Investments and Revitalization of the Historic Center

The package announced by Government and City Hall is not limited to roadworks.

In the same ceremony, the creation of the School of Circus and Scenic Innovation in Largo da Ordem was confirmed, with an investment of around R$ 6 million, integrated into the “Curitiba Back to the Center” program.

The facility will be installed in the São Francisco neighborhood, in front of the Curitiba Memorial, and is expected to offer courses, professional workshops, exchanges with national and international companies, and a permanent schedule aimed at the public frequenting the historic center.

The goal is to revitalize the cultural heart of the city in parallel with reorganizing mobility in the southern region, connecting urban planning, transport, and cultural life in the same package of public policies.

The forecast is that the School of Circus will be delivered between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, in line with the schedule for the main roadworks.

For the government, this synchronization reinforces the message that the city is preparing, at the same time, for a new mobility design and a more active and frequented historic center.

Expected Impact on Traffic and Challenges for Drivers

Today, crossing the Linha Verde via Marechal Floriano, especially during peak hours, means facing long lines, successive traffic lights, and constant delays to access neighborhoods like Boqueirão, Parolin, Auer, and Hauer.

The state government itself recognizes that the stretch has become an “urban knot” for both public and individual transport.

With the trinary, the three overpasses, the tunnels, and the requalification works, Government and City Hall expect a significant reduction in travel time, greater regularity of bus lines, and improvement in the metropolitan connection with São José dos Pinhais.

The implementation of adequate drainage, new sidewalks, landscaping, and fiber optic cabling is also presented as a way to enhance the surroundings, valuing properties and improving the urban environment.

At the same time, authorities admit that the construction period will heavily impact those who depend on the Linha Verde daily, with detours, temporary blockages, and additional slowdowns until the overpasses and tunnels are completed.

The official narrative is that there is no structural gain without a period of inconvenience, especially in an already saturated road network.

In light of this scenario, the question that remains for those who live and work in the region is simple and direct: do you believe that this package of works by Government and City Hall on the Linha Verde and Marechal Floriano will truly be sufficient to end the daily chaos in traffic, or will the problem simply move to another part of the city?
