Trump Exposes: India Offered to Eliminate Tariffs on U.S. Products Only After 50% Tariffs While Modi Showed Alliance with China and Russia
President Donald Trump revealed on Monday (1st) that India offered to eliminate tariffs for the U.S., but only after Washington imposed rates of up to 50% on Indian products. The statement was made on his Truth Social platform and comes amid the public rapprochement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the leaders of China and Russia during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Beijing.
According to CNN Brazil, Trump called the proposal late, stating that the trade relationship between the two countries has been “one-sided for many years” and that New Delhi should have acted earlier. His remarks highlight the global influence struggle involving the U.S., India, China, and Russia.
What Trump Said About Tariffs
According to Trump, the U.S. was harmed by decades of high tariffs imposed by India while Indian products entered the American market more easily. He emphasized that only after imposing tariffs of up to 50% did Washington indicate that New Delhi signaled openness to eliminate its import taxes.

However, the president stated that the Indian offer does not change his critical view of the imbalance in trade relations: “They now offered to reduce their tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done this years ago”, he wrote.
Modi Between Xi and Putin
Trump’s revelation comes just after symbolic images of Narendra Modi walking alongside Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin in Beijing. The gesture was interpreted as a political alignment of India with the Sino-Russian axis, contrasting with the American attempt to maintain New Delhi as a strategic ally.
During the SCO summit, Xi advocated for the creation of a new economic order aimed at the “Global South,” with less dependence on the West. Modi, on his first official visit to China in seven years, stated that India and China are “development partners” and highlighted the need to increase bilateral trade.
Pressure on Washington
The Indian positioning increases pressure on the United States, which sees India as an essential counterbalance to Chinese expansion in Asia. However, by maintaining purchases of oil and military equipment from Russia and tightening ties with Beijing, New Delhi signals an independent posture, not fully aligned with Washington.
According to analysts, the trade dispute could quickly turn into a geopolitical dispute. While Trump demands reciprocity, India leverages its strategic position to negotiate advantages with both the West and the China-Russia-led axis.
The revelation that India offered to eliminate tariffs for the U.S. shows how trade tensions are directly linked to the global political game. Modi’s gesture in Beijing reinforces that India seeks to balance between powers, taking advantage of the conflict moment to extract benefits from all sides.
And you, do you think India’s rapprochement with China and Russia will weaken the historical relationship with the U.S.? Or do you believe New Delhi will continue to play both sides to gain more space? Leave your opinion in the comments — we want to hear your perspective on this dispute.

Acho que vai jogar nos dois lados para ganhar mais espaço.
