Rio de Janeiro, June 3, 2020 – Ocyan, a company in the oil and gas sector, will contribute about R$ 305,000 to increase the number of tests for the new Coronavirus in Macaé, in Rio de Janeiro. The destination will be the “NUPEM Project UFRJ – Macaé“, managed by the COPPETEC Foundation, which will create a field laboratory for testing and research on COVID-19.

Currently, the UFRJ unit located in the northern part of the State conducts up to 20 tests per day to identify the virus, equivalent to 400 per month. With the new laboratory, the expectation is to increase to up to 300 daily tests, thus reaching 6,000 monthly and 42,000 samples by the end of the year. The field laboratory will allow for a reduction in sending tests to be done in the state capital, which is already overwhelmed.
The partnership is part of the actions outlined in Commitment Agreement No. 06/2019 signed between Ocyan and the Public Labor Ministry of Cabo Frio, which supports the project. The field laboratory will be a legacy of the pandemic and will be used for studies after the quarantine.

Ocyan opens registrations for startups focused on innovation in the oil and gas sector and will select projects for Innovation Day with the support of Nexio.
Macaé, with about 250,000 inhabitants, is one of the main hubs of the oil and gas production services chain in the country. Due to the high circulation of people from various regions of the country and the world, the municipality may experience new epidemic waves of the new Coronavirus after the relaxation of social distancing. Thus, the allocation of this funding from Ocyan to increase testing will facilitate pandemic control in the region.
Currently, the priority for testing in the local health network is for healthcare professionals and seriously ill patients hospitalized with suspected contamination. Thus, COVID-19 diagnoses take even longer due to the high demand, both in public and private laboratories, potentially exceeding up to 20 days. “Therefore, the support from Ocyan for a testing and research laboratory in the Macaé region is of utmost importance,” comments Marco Aurélio Fonseca, Sustainability Director of Ocyan.
Preventive Measures
For the executive, this moment calls for sanitary attention and precaution and helps us think about the need for social improvement:
– The internal actions we have adopted follow the recommendations of the WHO (World Health Organization), the Ministry of Health, and ANVISA, as our priority is the well-being and safety of our members and society. Our social concern is permanent and is also reflected in other programs that we maintain with UFRJ-Macaé, for example, particularly related to education – he explains.
In the last months of the pandemic, Ocyan has been carrying out preventive actions against the new Coronavirus among its offshore members (on-board) who work on drilling rigs and FPSOs, in addition to the onshore team (on land).
The company conducts daily tests on all employees before boarding. If the result is positive, the professional will remain on land and under observation. If any already boarded employee shows symptoms, they are disembarked and sent for medical treatment. Wearing masks is mandatory on all vessels, and meetings are preferably held outdoors.
The disinfection process for assets has already been implemented preventively, and sanitization has been reinforced with the use of germicidal ultraviolet lamps, in addition to rigorous cleaning in the refrigeration system. The onshore teams have been working from home office since the beginning of the social isolation.
