Unigel announces the resumption of urea production as of September. The measure is a response to the slight improvement in the petrochemical cycle and the forecast for increased demand for urea for the next winter harvest.
Unigel, one of the main chemical companies in Latin America and the largest manufacturer of nitrogenous fertilizers in Brazil, announced last Thursday (17/08), that its Each de Fertilizantes Nitrogenados, located in Laranjeiras, will resume urea production as of next September. The decision comes in response to a slight improvement in the petrochemical cycle and was announced by the company's CEO, Roberto Noronha Santos, at a press conference held this Thursday.
Strategic resumption boosts the state economy and maintains jobs
The resumption of urea production takes place one week after the temporary suspension of fertilizer manufacturing activities at the unit.
The CEO, Roberto Noronha Santos, highlighted that, although the scenario of the chemical industry remains challenging, the company considers this an opportune moment to restart its operations in a gradual and responsible way.
He also emphasized the forecast of an increase in demand for urea by the end of the year, driven by the upcoming winter crop.
The resumption of production is seen as a positive boost for the state's economy, as declared by the Secretariat for Economic Development of Science and Technology (Sedetec).
Secretary Valmor Barbosa stressed that the resumption not only preserves jobs, avoiding possible layoffs of 140 employees, but also stimulates an entire economic chain in the region.
Unigel prioritizes national independence in the production of nitrogen fertilizers
In addition, Unigel is still negotiating with Petrobras for projects related to renewable energy and fertilizers.
The company reinforces its strategic importance in the sector, since a significant portion of the national demand for nitrogenous fertilizers is still supplied by imports.
About 85% of this demand is met by imported products, highlighting the need to increase domestic production to reduce the country's vulnerability.
The Laranjeiras factory, when operational, has an impressive production capacity, being able to generate 450 thousand tons of ammonia and 650 thousand tons of urea annually.
Roberto Noronha Santos informed that the resumption of production of nitrogenous fertilizers in Brazil is of paramount importance for the safety of customers and for reducing dependence on imports.
The resumption of urea production by Unigel represents a crucial step towards food security and the country's self-sufficiency in nitrogen fertilizers.
With demand on the rise and the company's strategic vision, Brazil moves towards a safer and more resilient future in its chemical and agricultural production.
