Solid Results And Environmentally Sustainable Projects Drive Unipar Toward Accelerated Growth
As a leader in the production of chlorine and soda, and the second largest PVC producer in South America, Unipar stands out as the pillar supporting the industry and sanitation sector. In celebration of Industry Day, the company rejoices in its series of record results – with 84% operational capacity utilization – and the launch of one of its self-generated renewable energy projects.
“These impressive numbers reflect Unipar’s strategy to prioritize continuous process improvement and our team’s dedication to producing with superior quality,” says Rodrigo Cannaval, Unipar’s Chief Operating Officer.
With the goal of doubling its size in a decade, Unipar is following three paths toward growth: expanding its core businesses, exploring new geographies, and venturing into new projects adjacent to its core businesses, focused on basic chemicals and petrochemicals, which are always present in Unipar’s DNA.

Advancing in Sanitation
As part of its growth strategies, Unipar is turning to the progression of sanitation in Brazil. With a considerable gap detected in basic sanitation services, the company is moving to become a reference in this area, whether by supporting initiatives that aim to bring these services to the population or with projects aimed at ensuring the supply of the necessary products for this transformation.
One example of these projects is the expansion of the unit in Santo André (SP), which received investments of R$ 100 million and is expected to begin operations this year, with the installation of a new electrolyzer and a new hydrochloric acid furnace, which will represent a 15% increase in Unipar’s capacity.
In addition, the company is in the process of building a factory in the Camaçari Petrochemical Hub in Bahia, aiming to meet the growing demand in the region for hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and caustic soda – essential for sanitation. The unit will have a total capacity of 20,000 tons of chlorine and 22,000 tons of caustic soda per year, with operations expected to start in the second half of 2024.
Competitiveness As Strategy
As operational excellence has achieved records and reinforced Unipar’s potential in recent years, competitiveness is a crucial pillar for the company’s sustainable growth strategy.
With the aim of minimizing costs and operating at the highest standards of excellence, Unipar established three joint ventures with major players in the energy market in 2021, with the purpose of ensuring long-term access to a key input that represents about 50% of the variable costs of its operations: electricity. This includes two wind farms – one in Bahia and one in Rio Grande do Norte – and a solar park that has just started operations in Minas Gerais.
“With these projects, we aim to achieve the goal of operating with 100% of our energy demand coming from renewable sources, with 80% of that from these self-generation contracts, reducing our carbon footprint and following our sustainable growth plan,” concludes Cannaval.
