Between August and September 2024, more than 600 Brazilians, including 109 children, were deported from the United Kingdom on three secret flights by the British government. This information was disclosed by the newspaper The Guardian and represents a record, as the country has never before deported so many people of the same nationality on such flights, according to segundoasegundo.
Returns Classified as Voluntary
The Itamaraty stated that the return of Brazilians was voluntary, claiming that “this is not deportation, but rather the voluntary decision of participants to join the British initiative.” However, organizations advocating for the rights of Latin American immigrants in the UK expressed concern over the high number of children affected by these deportations.
Between July and September 2024, the British Home Office recorded a total of 8,308 returns, both forced and voluntary, which represents a 16% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Of this total, 6,247 were considered voluntary, with the government offering incentives of up to £3,000 (approximately R$ 22 thousand) for those who agree to return to their country of origin.

Secret Flights and Unknown Destinations
The three flights mentioned by The Guardian occurred within a span of less than two months, but the British government did not reveal to which Brazilian cities the deportees were taken. The dates and numbers are alarming: on August 9, 205 people were deported, including 43 children; on August 23, there were 206 deportations, with 30 children; and on September 27, 218 people were returned, of which 36 were children.
Concerns About Brazilian Immigrants
The Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK (Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK) expressed concern about the significant increase in voluntary returns of Brazilians. The organization highlighted that Brazilians face significant barriers to accessing information and quality legal advice, especially in their native language.
With the UK’s exit from the European Union, approved in a referendum in 2016, many Brazilians who migrated through countries in the block now find themselves without automatic permission to reside in the UK, putting them at risk of losing their rights due to misinformation.
What the British Government Says
A spokesperson for the Home Office stated that the government is implementing a plan to increase the deportation of illegal immigrants, expecting to save around £4 billion over the next two years. In April 2024, a law was passed allowing the deportation of immigrants who have applied for asylum, taking them to a destination like Rwanda, even if they have never been there.
What the Itamaraty Says
In a statement, the Itamaraty clarified that the UK proposed to organize voluntary return flights to Brazil for Brazilians enrolled in the Voluntary Return Program (VRS). This program offers not only financial assistance but also airfare for migrants wishing to return to their country. The voluntary return process aligns with the principles of Brazilian consular assistance and may be reviewed if the terms of participation change.
