Fiat, Ford, and Nissan Popular Cars Recall: Automakers Issue Urgent Alert, and Millions of Vehicles Need to Be Recalled Due to a Serious Defect!

Traffic safety is a constant concern for drivers and automakers. Recently, three of the leading popular car brands in Brazil – Fiat, Ford, and Nissan – issued a serious alert: millions of popular cars need to be recalled due to fatal defects in their airbags. The recall, affecting models manufactured by various automakers over the years, is related to defective airbags from the Japanese brand Takata, a problem that has already caused numerous deaths worldwide. Continue reading to learn more about the popular cars recall and whether your vehicle is involved.

What Is a Popular Car Recall?

A recall is a measure adopted by automakers to correct factory defects in their vehicles. It is a way to ensure that failures in components are repaired before they can cause accidents. In the recent case involving Fiat, Ford, and Nissan, the recall affects millions of vehicles circulating in Brazil, mainly due to airbags with manufacturing defects.

Since 2010, Takata, the manufacturer of the defective airbags, has been identified as responsible for components that can cause dangerous explosions. In Brazil, over 5 million popular cars have been called for the recall replacement, but only half of the drivers have taken their vehicles for the swap.

Metal Fragments from Defective Airbags Eject like a Point-Blank Shot, Which Can Be Fatal for Drivers

Takata’s airbags use a chemical compound called ammonium nitrate to inflate the device in case of an accident. However, over time, the compound can become highly unstable, especially in warm and humid environments.

When the airbag is deployed, instead of protecting the vehicle’s occupants, it can explosively rupture, projecting metal fragments into the car’s interior. According to experts, the fragments eject with such force that it feels like gunfire at point-blank range.

These failures have already caused more than 32 deaths worldwide, seven of which occurred in Brazil. The most recent case happened in April 2024, when carpenter Cléber Moreira died after the airbag in his car exploded during a minor collision, piercing his chest. Unfortunately, many drivers still have not taken their vehicles for the recall, putting millions at risk.

Fiat, Ford, and Nissan: Leading Popular Car Brands in the Recall

In Brazil, the popular car recall affects vehicles manufactured by Fiat, Ford, and Nissan. These brands, known for their significant presence in the Brazilian market, are among those most affected by Takata’s defective airbags. Check out the popular models from these brands that may be included in the recall:

  • Fiat: Models like Palio, Uno, Siena, and others manufactured between 2001 and 2018 may be part of the recall.
  • Ford: Cars like Fiesta, Ka, and EcoSport are also among the vehicles using Takata airbags.
  • Nissan: The March model, one of the best-selling popular cars, is among those that may need to have the airbag replaced.

How to Check if Your Car Needs a Recall

Many drivers are uncertain whether their vehicles are included in the recall. Fortunately, checking is simple. The Brazilian government, through the National Traffic Department (Senatran), provides an online platform where vehicle owners can check if their cars need a recall.

To check if your vehicle is on the list, simply access the Senatran website and enter the vehicle’s chassis number or license plate. If the vehicle is among the recalled models, it is essential to take the car to an authorized dealership for the replacement of the defective part – the service is free.

The Largest Recall in Automotive History

The Takata airbags recall is considered the largest in automotive history. Since the problem was identified, over 100 million vehicles worldwide have been called for replacement. In the United States, over 20 million cars with defective airbags were sold, leading to a series of lawsuits and Takata’s bankruptcy in 2017.

In Brazil, over 2.5 million vehicles still need to have the airbag replaced. Even after more than a decade of alerts, many drivers have yet to perform the repair, increasing the risk of fatal accidents.

Tragedies Related to the Airbag Defect

Unfortunately, several tragedies have already been recorded due to this problem. A shocking case occurred in Ceará in 2022 when a 38-year-old man died after a minor collision. Initially, rescuers believed he had been shot, but it was later confirmed that the cause of death was the airbag explosion, which launched metal fragments at the victim’s neck.

Another tragic example was the accident involving Cléber Moreira in 2024, who died instantly after the airbag in his car exploded during a low-speed collision. These cases highlight the severity of the problem and the urgency for drivers to carry out the recall for their vehicles.

Check if Your Vehicle Is Included in the Recall

If you own a vehicle from Fiat, Ford, or Nissan, or other automakers that also use Takata airbags, it is essential to check if your car is included in the recall. The process is simple, fast, and can save lives. The popular car recall is a necessary measure to ensure safety on the roads, and it is up to drivers to take the necessary actions.

Remember: safety comes first, and a simple repair can make all the difference in an accident. Be sure to check your vehicle and contribute to safer driving.
